Friday, May 3rd, 2013

Article source: Aidlin Darling Design

355 Eleventh is a LEED-NC Gold adaptive reuse of a historic and previously derelict turn-of-the-century industrial building. The owner’s intention was to adapt the existing warehouse located in the industrial SOMA area of San Francisco into a multi-tenant office building. In evaluating the building and its relationship to the site and the neighborhood, the architects advocated for the inclusion of a restaurant within the building to bring a more public use to the area.

The site is characterized, on the south and west side, by a homogeneous low-rise urban texture. To the north side, the site faces a long and narrow urban park which is stretched along a major circulatory artery. On the north side of the main road, high-rise housing block are distributed along the circulatory axis.

The extension project of the chocolate factory covers the three objectives outlined by the client.

  • Increases the production surface in the context of the existing factory,
  • Expands the administrative areas,
  • Restores the museum and shop.

With a contemporary spirit in mind, the materials and the colours used also fits into the traditional method of chocolate presentation. The wood evokes the colour of the cocoa export boxes, while the the top inset glass windows are framed with dark brown metal, reminding the onlooker of the paper wrapper of the goods.

Villa Lokaator in Paldiski, Estonia by kavakava architects

Thursday, May 2nd, 2013

Article source: kavakava architects

Situated nearby an ex-Soviet military town, which housed a nuclear submarine training base, Villa Locator deliberately advances the theme of its desolate surroundings. Starting point was an old army barrack made of calcium silicate bricks. The client’s brief was to reinterpret the surrounding military environment and keep the bulky 65-cm-thick existing walls as load bearing external walls. Renovated brick walls are visible in the interior of the house.

The building reveals its preciousness at first sight.  Its pure, sophisticated geometry situates it as a public building.  The deliberate areas of transparency reveal its content.  The reading rooms present the building to the town in the manner of an invitation.  The multimedia library is covered with large white veils that reflect the light.
