With a combined area of 64 hectares, on a spectacular location bordering the iconic Sydney Harbour waterfront, the Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney and public Domain is the largest single site in the Sydney Central Business District. Ongoing management of the space is crucial for the future development and direction of Sydney as a cultural and tourist destination. Due to celebrate its bicentenary in 2016, and as Australia’s oldest research and scientific institution, the Garden holds a unique place in the nation’s intellectual life and as a popular recreation and visitor destination.

The new integrated masterplan is due to be unveiled in November 2013. It will address the heritage of the Garden and its role, structure and future form; identify the means by which research and education can flourish; address the physical environment, facilities and character; and seek to establish a framework for a resilient and sustainable financial future for the Garden.

As the primary role of the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust is for scientific research, we have to ensure a sustainable financial future and funding for this work, is balanced against the needs of heritage, education, recreation and as a tourist destination. It’s a real privilege to have the opportunity to play a small part in the future role of this amazing historic site.”

The location is unique and breath-taking: the registered landmark from theBelle Epoque, the Pilatus-Kulm Mountain Hotel, is situated on an exposed mountain face at 6,995 feet above sea level, offering a splendid view of the surrounding summits, and the city of Lucerne way down in the valley. To celebrate its 120th anniversary, the hotel was completely renovated in 2010, and equipped with a new business centre, among other amenities. Still, it has been able to maintain its historic mountain hotel charm, not only thanks to its wooden shutters.

The yuppie ranch house stands in a hilly landscape, looking out on one side towards the mountains and on the other to the dry and stony plain of Friuli.
The only trace of human presence before the construction of the house was a masaron, a pile of stones once raised to mark a property boundary. This feature was exploited in defining the different areas of the ranch house, making it possible to explore new possibilities of form.

Facing Pontevedra, on the other side of the river Lerez, an untidy urban setting has developed with a mixture of houses and amenities. It is an environment that demands clear actions that will regenerate the urban surroundings. The renovation of the old Pasaron stadium tried to liberate space on its perimeter in order to create new urban squares and green areas for the enjoyment of neighbours and to allow for an easier access to the stadium.
