Passive House in Hradec Králové, Czech Republic by Echorost architekti

Wednesday, July 24th, 2013

Article source: Echorost architekti

The house was designed for the old couple, whose main demands were low maintenance/operation costs and distribution of main rooms to the ground floor.
It was the specific shape of the plot which set a boundary of the house and together with structural constraints also defined a resulting geometry of the house. The geometry was based on a consistent extrusion of the house boundary. The proposal took into account also an option that clients could buy up the neighbouring plots. This came true during the construction of the house. The design of the house was optimized for the lowest energy demand while keeping other design demands (e.g. possibility to use the first floor as a second flat). Therefore the house met the passive house criteria and among else qualified for the appropriate government subsidy.

GNRation in Braga, Portugal by Atelier Carvalho Araújo

Wednesday, July 24th, 2013

Article source: Atelier Carvalho Araújo

The intervention in the former building of the GNR (military police) brings together all the concept of dynamism of Braga European Youth Capital 2012. The project uses the concept of occupation as motif. The occupation by man and nature. It explores the boundary between an abandoned existing structure and a new invasor construction who takes over the space. A space in constant regeneration, rather than a final object.

Alex Monroe Studio in Snowsfields, South London by DSDHA

Wednesday, July 24th, 2013

Article source: DSDHA

The Alex Monroe Studio, Snowsfields is a new jewellery studio, sited within a stone’s throw of The Shard in the Bermondsey Conservation Area, providing a showcase for Alex’s growing international business. Consisting of a handcrafted 3-storey addition to an existing Edwardian single-storey shop front, the building provides workshop and studio space, alongside a boutique store, with meeting and dining spaces on the upper levels as well as a roof terrace with views towards London Bridge. The new building operates as a bespoke ‘bookend’ to the original terrace, creating a strong prow that completes the street frontage. The design maintains the continuity of the shop fronts, whilst the additional floors form a separate metal clad volume that sits lightly above.

20 social housing and 3 commercial spaces in Godefroy Cavaignac, Paris by H2o Architectes

Wednesday, July 24th, 2013

Article source: H2o Architectes

The project of the rue Godefroy Cavaignac in Paris consisted in the rehabilitation of a building which did not meet hygiene and security standards into new social housing.
The agency’s aim was to renew the image of the building in the street while responding to the requirements of the «patrimoine habitat environnement» certification. The project is largely based on the building extension, contemporary reinvention of the bow-window, inserted in the prolongation of the unfinished 19th century façade.

The alternation of voids and solids as well as the diagonal cutting of the volumes break the visual monotony of the alignment of the buildings in the street and offer new and interesting views onto the rue de Charonne.
Inside, the apartments benefit from new space and comfort including, for some of them, a small space for gardening, a loggia or balcony.

The courtyard is transformed into a planted patio which is made visible thanks to a transparent wall from the street. A page is turned, social life is reinvented.

PALÄON (Research and Experience Centre Schöningen Spears)
The Schöningen Spears, approximately 300,000 years old, are the oldest preserved hunting weapons of mankind discovered until now. Visible from far away, the sculptural building of the PALÄON now towers over the significant archeological site at the edge of the brown coal mine. Designed by Holzer Kobler Architekturen, the building stands as a landmark with the hilly landscape mirrored in its reflective façade. The exhibition forms the heart of the project, which presents the original excavation area in a spectacular manner.

La Corredoria health center is a new building whose programme demanded four independent functional areas, which included Emergency, admission of mentally ill patients, as well as the typical programme for outpatient services and all of this in a suburban alienated surrounding, hardly any reference except the rounded hill which was replaced by the building, the light curved roads from La Corredoria quarter and the distant views of the Naranco mountain, as a slightly curved shape.
