The owner wanted external blank walls. Then talk continued to fixed screens. Centre courtyard for light and air. These summed up for them, the tangible facets of an ideal home, a protective enclosure of solitude.
Introversion has a negative connotation in a culture where being social and outgoing are prized above all else. But what is withdrawal to some is energizing for those who thrive on self-reflection and contemplation; life is found within.

RAAS – Hand crafting a story for today
Set in the heart of the walled city of Jodhpur, Rajasthan, RAAS is a 1.5-acre property uniquely located at the base of the Mehrangarh Fort.
The brief was to create a luxury boutique hotel with 39 rooms in the context of the Old city quarter of Jodhpur. This has been translated into a project where there is a dialogue between the old and the new. Luxury was about being authentic both in terms materials and workmanship, and in providing visitors a tactile and sensual experience within the historical context of the old city of Jodhpur without aping the old.

The project responds to the morphology and topography of the field taking advantage the length of itself to place the house footprint and achieve more garden area and more cubic meters. So the exercise was to work the superposition of two volumes. The first is a steel basement that gives the impression of solidity and rootedness to the earth at the same time opens to the terrace and garden. The second is a box that has a finishing made from land and pigments to get a terracotta tone that breaks up to achieve the patios that seem to make incisions giving views and privacy inside.
