Article source: NEW THEME
The restoration of this mid-century John Lautner home included a reconsideration of living spaces and bedroom areas, which led to the fabrication of unique furniture pieces and installations that brought back the distinctiveness of the home’s original architecture. Interior spaces were reduced to an essential palette of white and wooden tones, emphasizing both light and transparency in a home that looks out upon Studio City and further out to the San Gabriel Mountains. The furniture built by NEW THEME seeks to express a contemporary perspective on classic ‘60s mod design in terms of the pieces built for the bedroom, living room and kitchen, dining areas.
NEW THEME INC.
Expanding upon the premise of sustainability, NEW THEME architecture seeks to foster a dialogue between green ideas and their articulation in radical new forms. Functioning as an integrated architecture and construction firm, NEW THEME has engaged a diverse clientele including restaurants, commercial premises and private residences, each time working in a custom fashion to deliver highly individualized and unique results.
Founded by Beth Holden and Wolfgang Melian in 2005, the firm pools together a broad base of experience and carries an aesthetic that synthesizes European and American architectural practices. Each project is considered within its own unique dimensions as to location, budget, function and the human need to occupy space. This allows the firm to work collaboratively with clients to pursue the ideal human dimensions of each custom project. NEW THEME seeks to harmonize the human environment with the natural environment, and redefine the boundaries of responsible and sustainable architecture in new, compelling forms.
Principal & Partner
Beth Holden is largely influenced by a continuation of modernist ideals and practices in her work. Holding a Bachelors of Architecture from SCI-Arc and a Masters in Architecture and Urban Design from UCLA, one of her first tasks as a young architect was to assist with the design of the Rive Gauche development for the French public housing authorities. Upon her return to the United States, she worked as an associate with Barton Myers where she oversaw and completed a number of commercial projects before she launched her own architectural firm, NEW THEME Inc.
As a certified green builder as well as a licensed California State Contractor, she is uniquely able to apply an approach to each of her projects that integrates all work stages from conception through construction until completion. Her fluency in both architectural forms and construction techniques gives her the ability to tailor her work for a wide variety of clients, and allows her to express space both within its habitable dimensions as well as its tactile forms.
Professionally trained as a production designer with a background in dramatic design, Wolfgang Melián has applied his hand to numerous custom carpentry projects in both Europe and the United States for over 20 years. His work extends from set and theater design for German production companies, to his more recent work as furniture and production designer for NEW THEME.
Working in conjunction with Ms.Holden, he emphasizes his craft in terms of the quality of materials used as well as his ability to deliver highly personalized results for projects ranging from private residences to commercial offices, restaurants and even television and film sets. Whether building individual pieces, installations or entire interiors, his craftsman approach allows for sleek, elegant results that emphasize the quality of his artisan approach.
