Klaverweide is a housing project for children with mental or physical disabilities. Located in the heart of De Draai, a new district in Heerhugowaard, the small-scale architecture with its bricks and tiles matches the surrounding buildings. The open and accessible atmosphere makes the kids integrate in the neighbourhood.

Four divisions, each housing four children, consist of a living room, kitchen and sensory bathroom. Every child has an independent apartment at his disposal to withdraw, consisting of a modest livingroom, bedroom, bathroom, storage and pantry. The choice for both personal and communal areas is in line with the care concept of Esdégé-Reigersdaal. Not only to offer security but also (social) development opportunities.

The building is two faced by its ‘H’ shape. On the outside are the individual gardens, on the inside the patio and the main entrance. The apartments also have their own entrance. Not as a front door for the children themselves, but for the parents when they want to be together with their child.

The clear floor plan structures the daily routines. Outside, between the vertical lines of the ‘H’ children can play in front of the entrance. The long sightlines never frighten, but emphasize the space. The communal rooms are wide-ranging and thanks to the many windows, sunlight brightens the rooms all day. The courtyards form a bridge to the surrounding community.
