Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in Hawaii by Hope’s

JAMESTOWN, NY – A historic retrofit project on some of the most hallowed ground in the United States, the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, was recently completed with the installation of 1,700 custom, handcrafted steel windows from Hope’s®.

The design-build project was the work of Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Hawaii to retrofit the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard/Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY/IMF) Building 155–with the mandate to maintain the structure’s historic window features.

Hope’s, widely regarded for customizing its hot-rolled steel windows to virtually any design vision, went one step further and literally created a new product line for Building 155: the Hope’s ONE55™SERIES Steel Windows.

A NAVFAC press release describes the stakes involved for this project:

Until recent years, Building 155 had been relatively untouched since its construction in 1941 and is classified as a Category-1 historical structure. As a result, historical preservation stakeholders whose interest is to ensure the preservation of the building’s significant physical features were involved in this project…Today, 1,700 new steel-framed windows encompass all four tiers of the facility on each side of the building. The new windows not only fit historic preservation requirements; but are also aesthetically pleasing and allow for greater visibility for personnel working within.

Building 155 provides support to PHNSY/IMF personnel and houses the Shipfitting Shop, Welding Shop, and Lagging Shop. The contract for renovating the structure’s windows was awarded in 2011 to Manson-Nan Hawaii, J.V. The project’s focus was two-fold: modernize the building’s profile and address safety concerns because of the building’s age.

“Prior to this window replacement project, Building 155 was not only aesthetically unappealing, but it was a safety hazard due to broken glass and the inability to open the windows for ventilation,” said Jonathan Mizushima, PHNSY/IMF Shop 11 branch head. “Employees are now able to open all the windows, which make working in the building more pleasant, and the risk of falling glass has been removed.”

“It is without exaggeration to say that all of us at Hope’s have been personally honored to be a part of this project,” says Randy Manitta, CEO/President of Hope’s. “In keeping with the level of national pride this historic site evokes, our experienced engineers created new steel window profiles to meet the vision of NAVFAC’s design team.\”

Or as Mizushima said: “The biggest improvement is that our building is now a better representation of the pride PHNSY/IMF’s Structural Shop takes in ‘Keeping Our Fleet Fit To Fight!’ ”
