Innovative school concept becomes realityin Amsterdam East

The school of the 21st century needs to satisfy a long list of demands, some of which seem at first to be contradictory. It needs to have character and function as an anchoring point within the neighbourhood. It must be multifunctional, flexible, energy-efficient, sustainable, affordable, and possible to build within just a few months. Impossible? No. In fact, it was recently completed: the Integraal Kindcentrum (Integral Child Centre, IKC) Zeeburgereiland in Amsterdam, designed by Studioninedots. The building was opened on 29 November.

Single-family home Teplice by 3+1 architekti

Article source: 3+1 architekti

Small piece of land owned by a builder that we were dealing with was kind of \”left\” in a rectangular pattern of local development.

The immediate proximity of large villas from the first half of the 20th century left psychologically and physically little space for wild experiments in architectural design.

OZ Residence in Silicon Valley, California by Swatt | Miers Architects

Sunday, December 8th, 2013

Article source: Swatt | Miers Architects

The first requirement that the Owners, a young couple with two children, expressed was that their new home should have a casual, barefoot feel, like a vacation destination, with strong indoor-outdoor connections. Their 2.8 acre site, with gentle slopes to the south and mature landscaping on all sides was the perfect setting to create a home that would fully engage the beautiful landscape for family living.

Hattiesburg House of Prayer in Mississippi by Suzane Reatig Architecture

Article source: Suzane Reatig Architecture

The House of Prayer is a new church designed and constructed for a small congregation in Hattiesburg, MS. From the front entry, sanctuary doors open to a light-filled room with polished concrete floors and warm wooden pews. A large, almost ethereal pendant light hangs above the altar and reflects the bright white walls of the sanctuary. The ceiling is comprised of steel joists with track lighting. Large storefront windows sit high above the floor allowing light into the space while still making the room feel private. Crepe myrtle trees can be seen out the rear window.

Campus WU -Teaching Center in Viena, Austria by BUSarchitektur

Sunday, December 8th, 2013

Article source: BUSarchitektur

We envisage the new academic space located at the north-east of the new Campus of the Vienna University of Economics and Business as a venue for multiple networking. More than a mere building, the Teaching Center is a learning platform that promotes spontaneous communication while also making it possible to undertake the classes and activities that occur within. This quest for spontaneous exchange has different levels and scales sharing one common denominator: the path is the goal. For us, a contemporary Teaching Center should encourage curiosity in the everyday routine of those who teach as well as those who learn, becoming a place where moving about and getting on stage does not lead to experiencing spatial boundaries by instead giving free reign to the imagination.
