Mortuary in the field in Cartagena, Spain by Martin Lejarraga Architect

Thursday, September 19th, 2013

Article source: Martin Lejarraga Architect

The commission of the Mortuary project starts with the location and management of a plot to raise the building. The property, an insurances company of local and regional scope, wanted to strengthen its customer base with this kind of facility in the area in which it concentrates his operations: the North of Cartagena, between the towns of ‘La Palma’ and ‘Pozo Estrecho’, in the surroundings of the Field of Cartagena and the ‘Mar Menor’ sea.

URBAN CURRENT[S]

A conceptual framework for the development of the city of Medellin

AN INTRODUCTION

Multiple intertwined streams of issues

Medellin is wealthy city; wealthy in terms of its ambitions and its potential. Further, this project is a rare opportunity the ability to reform the ENTIRE riverfront that runs through a major city is rare. Therefore, this opportunity must be thought of as being even bigger than just a public space design, it must be taken as a chance to reform and set the framework for Medellin’s future. Obviously the riverfront is the key element in this project, but its influence and importance is much larger than the given project site boundaries. This proposal uses this competition to set forth principals for redevelopment, the use of funds, the city and its history, the relation to ecology, the movement of people, and so forth. Clear thinking about the further evolution of the city and how this project can be a trigger in this process is not overlooked by this project.

ARTIST STUDIOS in Beijing, China by KNOWSPACE / Erhard An-He Kinzelbach

Thursday, September 19th, 2013

Article source: KNOWSPACE / Erhard An-He Kinzelbach

Two renowned Chinese painters decide to move to the outskirts of Beijing to the artist village Songzhuang in order to live and work in the quiet countryside and in the neighborhood of many fellow artists. The design for the studio houses departs from the traditional Chinese Courtyard House Type – not so much in terms of its representation or construction principles, but more in terms of aspects of its spatial performance, namely shelter (shielded outdoor space within the structure and figure), introversion (all openings open towards the inside, not towards the street), degrees of privacy (gradated levels of privacy through the succession of courtyards), orientation (main living spaces with south orientation). These are examined and translated into an architectural Prototype that reconciled 3 different juxtapositions: the inside and the outside, the working and the living, the individual and the collective.

NATURALMENTE CHIC in Treviso, Italy by Daniele Menichini

Thursday, September 19th, 2013

Article source: Daniele Menichini

Ospitalità diffusa is the all-Italian concept which is gaining more and more attention within the ultimate frontiers of the hospitality industry: it mainly revolves around the revamping of existing buildings peppered across the countryside or located in small villages. A concept which has long been conceived differently by other countries. This new interpretation is right where the project GREEN_ZERO has its roots: a new modular housing devoted to the accommodation sector; a suite entrenched in a sustainable shell to be installed in the woods, at seaside, in the heart of the countryside, or wherever the landscape permits.

PAPIERNIA club&restaurant by Karina Wiciak

Thursday, September 19th, 2013

Article source: WAMHOUSE

“Papiernia” is the ninth design from the “XII” collection, entirely designed by Karina Wiciak.

“Papiernia” (which in Polish means “paper mill”) is an elegant restaurant in a slightly industrial style, the leading element of which is ordinary cardboard , treated with tongue in cheek.

Some people may associate cardboard with junk or lash-up, but in this case it was used to create an exclusive, elegant restaurant.

Evill House in Nelson, New Zealand by Studio Pacific Architecture

Wednesday, September 18th, 2013

Article source: Studio Pacific Architecture

This house at Twisted Pine is set on four hectares of undulating land on a promontory near Mapua in the tidal waters of the Waimea Inlet.
The land was covered for many years in tall pine trees, which were cleared to open the site to the water and views. This pine timber was milled and forms the basis of the house itself, meaning that the house’s fabric is literally from the land upon which it sits. Making the most of their impressively large spans, the massive timber beams and columns crafted from these 80-year-old pines were arranged in three long, low wings around a central courtyard.

Modern House in London, England by LLI Design

Wednesday, September 18th, 2013

Article source: LLI Design

The brief was to create a 700 square foot extension to house an open plan kitchen / living / dining room to this lateral house in Highgate, North London.

The house is in a very secluded position, surrounded by greenery, completely hidden from view, the only clue as to what lies beyond is a simple discrete gate set in the fence.
