About WAF

World Architecture Festival (WAF) is the largest annual festival and live awards programme for the global architecture community.

It is taking place at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore between 1st – 3rd October 2014.

WAF has three central pillars of activity:

  • A wide-ranging conference programme, featuring keynote lectures, dozens of expert-led talks and seminars from thought-leading architects and designers from across the globe.
  • The world’s largest annual awards programme in which practices from around the world compete across 28 award categories for global recognition. Architects of every shortlisted project are invited to attend the festival to give a live presentation to a panel of judges, asserting their case for why their project should win. The winners of each category are put forward to compete for the coveted World Building of the Year award, presided over by the festival’s ‘super-jury’, with the presentation of the award being the culmination of WAF 2014. This year’s super jury members are Richard Rogers (chair), Rocco Yim, Julie Eizenberg, Enric Ruiz Geli and Peter Rich.
  • Three festival halls where all award entries are displayed in a unique awards gallery and where sponsors and suppliers can interact with delegates, make new contacts and showcase their services and products.

As well as this the festival plays host to an international, live student charrette; parties and receptions in some of Singapore’s most exciting locations; exclusive tours to Singapore’s most recent architectural sites of interest and a celebratory gala dinner and awards ceremony.

WAF has welcomed over 12,500 attendees to date, including over 2,000 in 2012. The Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, itself a previous WAF Award winner, is WAF’s home for the third year running, having been held in Barcelona for four years previously, providing the perfect backdrop to this truly global architectural extravaganza.

WAF are proud to work with Founder Partner, Grohe and Headline Partner, AzkoNobel.

Villas Finestre in Ixtapa, México by CC ARQUITECTOS / MANUEL CERVANTES CESPEDES

Saturday, October 4th, 2014

Article source: CC ARQUITECTOS / MANUEL CERVANTES CESPEDES

The villas were planned as a delicate project insertion on the site and its environment. Based on this, the main guidelines for their design were: topography, natural environment and the solar orientation. After highly considering these factors, a series of spaces where placed in direct unification of the exterior with the interior, making sure the privacy of different owners and their views were respected.

HOME CAPITAL in Brasília – DF, Brazil by Ney Lima

Saturday, October 4th, 2014

Article source: Ney Lima

The house of architecture influenced by movements that emerged in the 60s – the same as the construction of Brasilia – has no such historical recovery by mere coincidence. The result was a request of residents who love the modernist style and one of the Brazil Capital and from the decision of the architect who chose to create a coherent work with the city, which today is the greatest living example of that school, that clashes with the local context.

Ritz Carlton Hotel in Bahrain by Lithos Design srl

Saturday, October 4th, 2014

Article source: Lithos Design srl

Lithos Design is among the companies that the architects’ studio MAS has selected for the refurbishment and renovation project for the exteriors of the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Bahrain.

The aim of the refurbishment was to extend the food & beverage area with an ensuing greater recreational offering for guests in the outdoor area, spanning 9,000 m2. To achieve the objective set by the customer, MAS architecture worked on the connection between the central part of the hotel and the beach, removing all physical obstacles and using architectural elements whose finishes were able to enhance the value of the atmosphere and the soft and relaxing colours of the new landscape.

LOPEZ HOUSE in Eagle Rock, California by Martin Fenlon Architecture

Saturday, October 4th, 2014

Article source: Martin Fenlon Architecture

This project, located in the Eagle Rock area of Los Angeles, is situated on an irregularly-shaped, steeply-sloping lot. Faced with a limited budget, it was particularly challenging to negotiate the constraints of the lot while taking advantage of the site’s sweeping view. The owners wanted the house to evoke the area’s craftsmen architecture, so this vernacular served as a basis for the design.
