ALEXANDRA RESIDENCE in Montreal, Canada by NatureHumaine

Saturday, January 18th, 2014

Article source: NatureHumaine

The client’s priority was to maximize the natural light in their new live/work house in Montreal’s Mile-Ex district. This was made challenging by the east-west orientation of the infill lot. However, our design fills even the core of the house with light through the implementation of a 2 storey light-well which runs the length of the southern side of the house.

Dp Aquaterra by Tectoniques Architects

Land of the Brave
After a call for ideas addressed to the local residents, the Maison de l’Environnement et du Développement Durable (Centre for the Environment & Sustainable Development) of the Hénin-Carvin Joint Urban Authority adopted the name Aquaterra. The facility is in the middle of a large park on the site of the former Drocourt coking plant. Founded in 1925, this was one of Europe’s largest coke production plants. After changes in the coal and steel industries in the late 20th century, the plant finally closed in 2002. All of the developments were quickly demolished, leaving just a large platform and some terrils (slag heaps). The marked, polluted ground and the slag heaps, mountains and hills, composed of inert but emblematic masses in this flat landscape, are the only relief visible from a long distance.

V’ House in Maastricht, Netherlands by Wiel Arets Architects

Saturday, January 18th, 2014

Article source: Wiel Arets Architects

V’ House was constructed for a couple that collects vintage cars, and is stitched within the medieval tapestry of Maastricht. The city dictates all new structures remain within the envelope of pre-existing buildings, and so a cut was created in the house’s front façade to generate a triangulated surface, which leads from one neighbor’s sloped roof to the opposite neighbor’s vertical bearing wall.

Phase 2 of the renovation of the Michigan Memorial Phoenix Laboratory (MMPL) – originally built in 1955 as a living memorial to honor the men and women of the University of Michigan community who lost their lives in World War II service – is now complete. In addition to a renovation of the existing building’s second level as research laboratories, Phase 2 also included the design and construction of a new building addition that houses the University of Michigan Energy Institute (UMEI).

Pinterest in San Francisco, CA by Schwartz and Architecture

SaA’s work as executive architect for this 45,000 sq ft tenant improvement corresponded with Pinterest’s rapid expansion, including the continued evolution of the company’s ethos and character. In many ways, the building was seen by the client as a blank architectural canvas to be curated by the employees, much as their web presence supports the gathering and organization of images into a virtual pin board. Through a series of Make-A-Thons, the Pinterest folks moved in and hacked the space, immediately making it their own.

The move back into the heart of the city has been embraced by San Francisco, with Pinterest part of a broader trend for many tech companies. The adaptive reuse of an older building fits with the DIY, collector spirit of the company.

Friday, January 17th, 2014

Article source: Studioninedots

The school of the 21st century needs to satisfy a long list of demands, some of which seem at first to be contradictory. It needs to have character and function as an anchoring point within the neighbourhood. It must be multifunctional, flexible, energy-efficient, sustainable, affordable, and possible to build within just a few months. Impossible? No. In fact, it was recently completed: the Integraal Kindcentrum (Integral Child Centre, IKC) Zeeburgereiland in Amsterdam, designed by Studioninedots. The building was opened on 29 November.
