Sports Hall ‘De Smeltkroes’ in Liessel, The Netherlands by Slangen+Koenis Architects

Tuesday, January 7th, 2014

Article source: Slangen+Koenis Architects

The sports hall was commissioned by a group of sports clubs; a football club, a netball club and a volleyball club. The combined effort of this group – for example with volunteering construction workers – made it possible to construct this building on a very tight budget. For us the challenge was to design a building that would house all the clubs, could be used both separately and simultaneously by the different users and still be a notable landmark for the small community of Liessel. By combining parts of the functions of the original program and the newly designed flexible spaces, we were able to reduce the total gross floor area and thereby the total building cost.

Stacey-Turley Residence in Ottawa, Canada by Kariouk Associates

Tuesday, January 7th, 2014

Article source: Kariouk Associates

The requirements for this project called for the design of a small home that would respond to the evolving life needs of a young couple, with two small boys, who intend to live their lives here for the next half century.  A significant spatial challenge from the start of the project was that the maximum allowable width of the house could only be twenty-four feet, hence the house would necessarily need to be long; because windows on the long sides of the home were greatly restricted by zoning regulations, there was an immediate design challenge to bring light into the long interior volume that otherwise would be dark.

MILLENIUM PARK in Zielona Góra, Poland by Salony Foundation and BWA Zielona Góra

Tuesday, January 7th, 2014

Article source: Salony Foundation and BWA Zielona Góra

Millenium Park in Zielona Góra until the 1960s. functioned as the Green Cross cemetery. Upper branches of trees let hardly any light inside the park, ground level lacks lower greenery – that is why the park seems to be dark and dangerous.

Our main idea was to bring back life into Millenium Park, eliminate spatial obstacles preventing the park to become unique, multifunctional public space.

Mandeville Canyon Residence in Los Angeles, CA by Griffin Enright Architects

Tuesday, January 7th, 2014

Article source: Griffin Enright Architects

The site for this project is located on a cul-de-sac which creates a tapered lot manifesting in a fairly small curved front yard lot line, while the rear yard of the site opens to the canyon and city views. Two distinct conditions emerged from the design; from the rear yard the house is seen as part of a series of horizontal volumes which merge with the terrain of the landscape, while the front yard presence of the house is distinctly more urban, vertical, and formal. This dichotomy between the front and back zones of the property is emphasized by the articulation of two vertical walls that are folded into roof surfaces to create a backdrop anchoring the horizontal terrain.
