Mandeville Canyon Residence in Los Angeles, CA by Griffin Enright Architects

Tuesday, January 7th, 2014

Article source: Griffin Enright Architects

The site for this project is located on a cul-de-sac which creates a tapered lot manifesting in a fairly small curved front yard lot line, while the rear yard of the site opens to the canyon and city views. Two distinct conditions emerged from the design; from the rear yard the house is seen as part of a series of horizontal volumes which merge with the terrain of the landscape, while the front yard presence of the house is distinctly more urban, vertical, and formal. This dichotomy between the front and back zones of the property is emphasized by the articulation of two vertical walls that are folded into roof surfaces to create a backdrop anchoring the horizontal terrain.

The rebirth of the Hollywood Bowl marked the end of a six-year process in which Hodgetts + Fung re-invented the acoustics, enhanced the functionality, and nearly doubled the size of that hundred-year old icon while echoing the memory and visual identity of the original.

Flood House by F9 Productions

Tuesday, January 7th, 2014

Article source: F9 Productions

This project started as a response to the repeated flood challenges of where the two principles (Alex Gore and Lance Cayko) went to college.  The Fargo, North Dakota area floods almost every year and Alex has fought floods as a civilian and in the National Guard. During one of these outings Alex began to think about the ramifications of the dikes bursting and what would happen to all of the houses they were trying to save. These phenomena became increasingly threatening with the advent of hurricane Katrina, and the ongoing floods across the United States today.  As a result Alex and Lance dove into designing a house that could withstand these forces.

Villa in Děčín, Czech Republic by Studio pha

Tuesday, January 7th, 2014

Article source: Studio pha

The initial task was mainly to find the right location for a home (villa) on a large area, with its orientation providing views of the countryside and city. The house is situated on the edge of a natural divide in the landscape so that each floor is consistent with the land. The stone base supports each exaggerated conglomeration of rooms, which are partly cantilevered over the terrace and divided into parts for children and parents.

Sohsul Hotel in Seoul, S.Korea by Archigroup ma

Article source: Archigroup ma

It is a common sense that detailing takes its place at the later phase of process, and this is especially true for an architectural design. However, on the other hand, I think it is possible for detail to be the beginning of the process. The more so, if the process is for interior design. Although Mies van dero Rohe said “God is in the details” to emphasize <precision> and Rem Koolhaas stated “no money, no detail, just pure concept” to put <concept> of the plan before anything, the detail was what connected the beginning and the end of this project. The detail is not limited to properly joining and finishing the materials. It motivates the design, brings harmony to neighboring materials, and sometimes the detail itself grant certain characteristic to the whole space. Every material has its own unique characteristics and it can be revealed through the detail. Properly displayed detail distinguishes itself from the other materials, and that uniqueness became the main material for the design for this project.

TAVONATTI HOUSE in Valparaíso Region, Chile by PAR Arquitectos

Saturday, January 4th, 2014

Article source: PAR Arquitectos

The commission was to develop a house under the standards of the real estate business, a basic and optimized program complemented by a strategy of exterior terraces and main rooms open to the panoramic view.

In response to a sunken site with a gentle slope, with glimpses of ocean views, the program aims to raise the programmatic piano nobile of the house, from the perpendicular overlap of 2 volumes of simple lines that make up a new dimension. The first, in elevation, in the direction of the views of the bay, which makes up the access and contains the public spaces.
