New Jiangwan Ecological Exhibition Center in Shanghai, China by Pu Miao Architecture

Thursday, January 23rd, 2014

Article source: Pu Miao Architecture

On the north edge of Shanghai city, an isolated wetland of about 10 hectares has remained undisturbed for several decades. Now it becomes a nature reserve and a part of the park system of New Jiangwan City, a new town developed around the wetland. Since the fragile ecological system can only afford guided tours of small groups, it is necessary to establish an exhibition observation center at its west side for the public to use. In the architect’s long-term plan, two elevated walkways will radiate from the Center into the reserve so the entire area will be accessible to the public.

The river Dijle is of great importance for the history of Mechelen. Right through the center flows the River Dijle. The river with its Dijle Tablets provide a physical barrier in the fabric of the city, but is also a fast connection from the surrounding countryside, along the city park ‘The Botanique’ to the center. The Lange Schipstraat is the part of this route that was designed by OKRA, and part of this route over the Dijle Tablets.

Union Station Neighborhood Transformation in Denver by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP

Tuesday, January 21st, 2014

Article source: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP

A 14-block scar in the city’s urban fabric, the rail yards, track sidings, and service areas of Denver’s historic Union Station were underutilized for decades. In 2004 voters approved a tax increase to fund a regional transit plan with Union Station as the hub of the system. The redevelopment plan for the former rail yards involved master planning, urban design, and architectural design work to knit together light rail, commuter and intercity rail, regional and local buses, downtown shuttle buses, taxis, shuttles, vans, limousines, bicycle routes and pedestrian networks into an intermodal transportation hub and urban transit district.

Nearing the 100th-year anniversary of its Central branch, the St. Louis Public Library sought to modernize the space for a new century, increase public access, and enhance the original Beaux Arts building by Cass Gilbert as a cultural treasure.

From the building’s original south entry, a granite stair leads to the reception foyer, which is connected to a central Great Hall. The hall is surrounded by five wings, four dedicated to public reading rooms and the fifth, the North Wing, to a multistory book depository.
