Urban strategy

The new ETH building is conceived as an efficient and flexible architectural device, providing an answer to the multiple aspects shaping its complex environment.

On the one hand, the landscape and the urban quality of the public spaces around the building condition the building’s insertion.  The respect of the historical urban fabric, in particular the Heritage garden in the south facade of the site, is essential as it constitutes an important area of the city urban fabric throughout the centuries. At the same time, all the classed trees in the site will be preserved.

House with a large hipped roof in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan by Naoi Architecture & Design Office

Article source:  Naoi Architecture & Design Office

This is a house for a family of four, situated on one of the lots for sale at a newly developed area in “satoyama” or semi-natural woodlands. The land is too large for a simple program requested by the client: a private house with a garage for two cars. Taking advantage of the large site area, we proposed a spacious one-story house that is open to the surrounding neighborhood, based on a design concept of “connecting space to nature”. The site faces two streets on the south and the north sides and no fences are installed along the both borders. The front yards on the both sides visually serve as pubic park although they are not accessible by non-residents.

Offices Infrax West in Torhout, Belgium by Crepain Binst Architecture nv

We were commissioned to build Infrax West’s new offices after winning a competition in which Infrax’s high degree of ambition had to be expressed in a strong conceptual design that matched and enhanced its corporate identity. Our characteristic ecological and sustainable values were given expression in this project by using a metaphor for a forest in which a host of slender concrete trunks were topped with a broad green ‘crown’.

LIVSRUM Cancer Counselling Centre in Næstved, Denmark by EFFEKT

Tuesday, February 4th, 2014

Article source: EFFEKT

The centre is designed as a coherent cluster of seven small houses situated around two green courtyards. Each house with an individual function but as a whole they form a continuous spatial experience.

Each house in the coherent cluster has its own specific function which as a whole form a coherent sequence of different spaces such as a library, kitchen, conversation rooms, lounge, workshops, fitness, wellness etc. The building offers a variety of different spatial variations specially selected to embrace informal counseling and visitation with a focus on user comfort and well-being. A varying ceiling height and choice of natural materials leads to a building with its own unique architectural expression clearly differentiates it from the surrounding hospital buildings.
