Library for the community in Muyinga, Burundi by BC Architects

Thursday, February 13th, 2014

Article source: BC Architects

The first library of Muyinga, part of a future inclusive school for deaf children, in locally sourced compressed earth blocks, built with a participatory approach.

Our work in Africa started within the framework of OpenStructures.net. BC was asked to scale the “Open structures” model to an architectural level. A construction process involving end-users and second-hand economies was conceived. Product life cycles, water resource cycles en energy cycles were connected to this construction process. This OpenStructures architectural model was called Case Study (CS) 1: Katanga, Congo. It was theoretical, and fully research-based. 5 years later, the library of Muyinga in Burundi nears completion.

Bulthaup Showroom TLV by Pitsou Kedem Architects

Article source: Pitsou Kedem Architects

An abandoned, derelict building in Tel Aviv Port I was asked to design the new showroom for the German kitchen company bulthaup.  In order to put together a design concept, I went to the company’s factory in Munich.  Whilst in the factory’s courtyard, when I was talking to the carpenters and other professionals who hand build these kitchens with great craftsmanship, skill and precision, I suddenly came across a row of white containers, all with the company’s logo and all waiting to be filled before being shipped to all four corners of the globe.

Article source: dmp arquitectura

Finishing off an alley of a popular colony at the foot of the Ajusco Hill, the house of three floors pretends to integrate itself to the context with a material of a deep social meaning, the block of concrete. The scheme was thought to exploit the maximum line of vision as possible in the public spaces within a plot of 87 m2 and a limited budget.

Food and Agriculture Pavilion in California by Michael Jantzen

Thursday, February 13th, 2014

Article source: Michael Jantzen

This pavilion proposal was created as a tourist attraction for the California Department of Food and Agriculture. Its design is intended to sustainably celebrate the great diversity, and the future of food production in the state of California.

The shape of the large concrete structure was based on a contour map of a California hill. Various food crops are planted in raised troughs that follow the contours of the perimeter of the hill. These plants are continually changed out in order to display the wide variety of crops actually grown on farms in California.
