24aDorset Road is a small two bedroomed house in Alexandra Palace, north London, added onto a terrace of picturesque Victorian cottages originally built for railway workers. The clients had lived there for twenty years, loved the road and took the opportunity to sell their old house, but keep an attached garage, which became the site for their new house. Our brief was to make a simple, contemporary home, filled with light.

SINGLE FAMILY HOUSE Habrovice in Ústí nad Labem, Czech Republic by 3+1 architekti

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2014

Article source: 3+1 architekti

Agricultural village spread around a municipal road. Original strong and confident establishment as well as neighboring generous farm houses are gone. Nearby natural swimming pool (widely used not long time ago) has been devastated (also due to lack of interest of local authorities). That is an unsettling image of the contemporary outside. Uncertainty, treading water… Now what?

House in Ohno, Japan by Airhouse Design Office

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2014

Article source: Airhouse Design Office

A piece of land in a Japanese persimmon (kaki) orchard was offered as the project area for a residential house. As the client wanted wide open spaces with high ceilings, a structure composed of a large roof set on top of seven thick columns was used. To secure copious glass windows, private areas are located inside the columns while intervals between columns are designated as living, dining and kitchen spaces. With this composition, only the sky and the kaki orchard are visible from the inside, giving the area an open feeling while the kaki trees provide a sense of privacy from the outside world, all of which makes for a relaxed atmosphere in the interior areas. As the landscape transforms with the changing of the kaki seasons, a generous living space is produced in the house nestled among the kaki trees.

Frog Queen in Steiermark, Austria by SPLITTERWERK

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2014

Article source: SPLITTERWERK

The Graz-based design collective SPLITTERWERK was commissioned to design this headquarters building for PRISMA Engineering, a machine and motor technology company also located in Graz. The objective was to design a structure which could house the company’s various research and development programs, and selectively showcase the work to a varied range of often competing clientele. Thus the building design needed to accommodate both high-end testing and presentation without jeopardizing the security and secrecy with which the work is developed.

Lampwork Lofts in Oakland, California by Levy Design Partners, Inc

Sunday, September 21st, 2014

Article source: Levy Design Partners, Inc

This historically significant 4-story building, constructed of masonry bearing walls and heavy timber, occupies a rectangular 1.5 acre site at 1614 Campbell Street in Oakland, CA. Originally used as an incandescent light factory by General Electric (GE) and designed by the Austin Company, the building construction was completed between 1912 and 1917. The site continued under GE ownership in 1962 when the division closed. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake resulted in the destruction of a north bay of the west wing, not to be rebuilt in the rehabilitation project. The structure is noted for being the first industrial building on the West Coast to employ women.

L’ÉCRAN (THE SCREEN) in Québec, Canada by Alain Carle

Sunday, September 21st, 2014

Article source: Alain Carle

The contextual constraint of this project, located on a lakeshore, enabled us to pursue the exploration of the possibilities of work geared to perceptual considerations. Narrow in depth, the site presented several setback constraints (next to a lake, stream, street, etc.). The buildable area was therefore somewhat narrow and irregular, which nonetheless offered the opportunity to design a project outside the typical precepts of “stylish” residences. The difficulty with respect to layout also facilitated discussions with the owners during the presentation of the concept, because there could be no question here of an idealized form. On the contrary, the site imposed a non-premeditated conceptual approach, anchored in the possible rather than what was there.

1m2 staircase® -Space Saving Staircase by EeStairs

Sunday, September 21st, 2014

Article source:  EeStairs

Now you can enjoy a beautiful, functional staircase where conventional staircases are not practical. EeStairs’ space saving stairs allow you to do more with less. Limited space? There are many situations where a property can be enhanced by creating a useable space from a redundant upper level; however a consistent factor is limited space. The introduction of a staircase to provide access to a proposed upper level will invariably compromise the floor space below where originally no stair was intended.
