Virtual Reality Veneer by Jantzen studio

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2014

Article source: Jantzen studio

For over forty years I have been working as an experimental artist and designer. In all of that time I have become very aware of how important aesthetics are in dictating the amount of the earths resources that are consumed by the human population. Most things, including building, have to look a certain way in order for people to feel good about using them, and most often a lot of resources are consumed just to make these things look a certain way. Much of the stuff we use could be made with much fewer of the earths resources if they did not have to maintain a specific aesthetic, directed toward a specific consumer. As an example buildings, especially houses, in most cases would function very well as places in which we are sheltered from the elements and our basic functional needs are supported without the requirement to maintain a specific aesthetic image. In fact, if we were all blind, it would not matter what our houses looked like as long as they kept us physically comfortable.

The Freedom of The Press Monument, about to be built on the Monumental Axis in Brasília, has won one of the world’s most prestigious awards in Architecture. Our project was the winner of the World Architecture Festival Award 2014, in the category Culture – Future Projects, running against nine other international works. The announcement took place on Wednesday, October 1st, during an event that gathered professionals from over 50 countries in Singapore. The WAF award has only been given to three Brazilian Architecture offices before. We accept this accolade with great joy, a renewed enthusiasm and deep gratitude to our partners, friends and our team, all of whom made this achievement possible.

Morumbi Residence in São Paulo, Brazil by Monica Drucker

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2014

Article source: Monica Drucker

When she saw the 2,500 m² lot at the top of the Morumbi hills, in São Paulo, the architect Monica Drucker knew that she had found the ideal spot for her client’s residence. The area harmonized the view to the urban skyline with the tranquility of a tree-lined street, in addition to excellent privacy conditions assured by the 1.5 m unevenness relative to the street. In the project, it is possible to identify elements of the Paulista modernism repertoire, such as the horizontal windows, the overhangs, the rigid lines in angles and whiteness. The construction preserved the existing trees and bamboos defining the entrance, enhancing the volume, the 3.60 m overhangs and the transparent frames.

Izakaya Kinoya in Montréal, Canada by Jean de Lessard

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2014

Article source: Jean de Lessard

For its latest Kinoya, interior designer Jean de Lessard has tapped into the sources to emulate in his design the primary spirit, function and aesthetics of the izakaya[1], as the latter was originally an informal place where people drank beer and sake. The transformation is particularly unusual that it explores through extreme design  intimacy in relationships between people, making of Kinoya a true representation of the unique approach the designer has developed about the different ways of occupying a space.

Re-Use in Netherlands by Global Architects

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2014

Article source: Global Architects

The renovation of the top floor of this Dutch mansion was a challenging one since the goal was to restore the traditional function of the rooms in an efficient and contemporary way without compromising the overall spatial experience. The main section of the apartment consists of a large space that contains the living room and the dining room. Two minimalist style built-in closets are centrally positioned alongside both walls and provide the total amount of requested storage space, including a hidden fridge, storage for the laundry machine and a bookcase. A clear division in functionality and the recovery of the proportions of the rooms have been accomplished without diminishing the sensation of the abundant presence of space. Daylight penetrates from both sides the complete depth of the interior and the ceiling hovers unhindered over the entire space.
