The newly renovated and extended Bio Resort Ulrichshof is located in Rimbach in the middle of the idyllic Bavarian forest.

The family hotel was upgraded and extended with a three-storey open hotel hall which includes a new reception, lobby and lounges; moreover a “Waldpassage”, Spa, Outdoor Pools and 41 new rooms and suites were realized. The volumes extends on the whole area and connects to the existing hotel and the barn.

A glazed cubus forms the centre of the complex, which hosts the lobby and the lounge of the hotel on 1.200 m2.

The lobby functions a a connecting element within the ensemble. From the lobby you reach the 4-story high adjoining building where the 31 new standard rooms and 10 suites are placed. The Spa house is located in the east of the ensemble and offers 1.800m2 of wellness; it is always connected with the lobby building. The connector of the old and the new is also a glazed passage, the “Waldpassage”.

noa* creates stories

noa* writes stories, redefines and questions in order to connect the old and the new. The goal in this particular project was to tell the story of the former barnstead and the spirit of the place, that evolves from the history, the nature and the people there.

“… who finds the soul of the place, the genius loci, might build in a more authentic way. But who is able to question and to interprete what is there and to translate it into contemporary forms, can bring the stories back to live” says the architect Stefan Rier.

The location far from civilisation and so close to the mythical content of the forest and grasslands was a challenge and fascination at the same time. noa* were acting as archeologists and translaters at the same time, because everywhere there were stories and tales about the Bavarian forest: witches, druids and ghosts. But also stories about people that lived in the area and want to be awakened. “… good stories accompany people sometimes for quite a long time and leave their traces along their path of life”, thinks Stefan Rier. Stories from the surrounding are captured and are told by the architecture and/or the interior design.

“In our working ethos we focus on the people first. We assume that architecture and interior design communicates in between the person and the surrounding; when building we are actually creating some kind of skin for the people.
