Mountain Guest House in Barcelona, Spain by Dom – arquitectura

Thursday, January 15th, 2015

Article source: Dom – arquitectura

The existing volume could not be changed, so we adapt the guest house program to it.

First of all we covered with insulation and waterproofing the roof, and then we did the same with the facades and interior space.

The idea is to open the inside space to outside, so the users could be available to enjoy the large garden with views. The cover is extended with a new wicker pergola with iron structure, so we can increase the terrace space and visitors will be more in touch with the garden, the nature and the orchard.

The Jetty – bridge to the Mont Saint-Michel in France by Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes

Thursday, January 15th, 2015

Article source: Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes

Creating a new access to one of the most remarkable cultural monuments and landscapes in Europe is a rare challenge for the design of a causeway.

The estuary of the Couesnon River surprises by the immensity of the bay surrounding the Mont Saint-Michel, by the beauty of light and the colours of the natural elements. The changing sea level by tides rising up to 14 m,  creates a repeated event exposing the forces of nature and offers a variety of landscapes alternating between land reaching far out into the sea on low tide and the water filled bay with the Mont transformed into an island as only landmark on high tide. This radical change contributes to the magic of the site.

SPIRULINE FOUNTAIN in Confignon, Switzerland by BUREAU A

Thursday, January 15th, 2015

Article source: BUREAU A

The Spirulina Fountain displaces the culture of landscape architecture and gardening towards contemporary issues of land and urban farming in restrained areas. The fountain constitutes a hybrid, fusing the production basins of the intense blue-green algae with contemplative Italian gardens of the 16th century. More specifically, the form and dimensions of the fountain quotes the water cascades of the Villa Aldobrandini built in 1550 in Frascati, 20 km southeast of Rome.

Ballhaus in Graz, Austria by HoG architektur

Thursday, January 15th, 2015

Article source: HoG architektur

The new residential building Stadthaus Ballhausgasse fills a long-time void on this street in the historic city centre of Graz, Austria. The street facade interprets the design principals of the late 19th century using a contemporary language. The plasticity created by a game of light and shadow on the cornices, protruding windows and surrounding frames, as well as their arrangement, is achieved by the absorption and continuation of these elements in the new mirror-effect facade. A three-dimensional appearance, in the form of slightly inclined triangular surfaces, emerges and links the different cornice heights of the neighbouring buildings, thus making the reduced number of storeys, when compared to the late 19th century buildings, less clearly recognisable. The result is a differentiated interaction between facade and window surfaces on several levels, which reveal new details from different perspectives. As a representative view, reminiscent of the end of the 19th century, the street facade complex design and higher expenditure on materials contrasts with the unadorned courtyard facade.
