How can a unique access to a place be used as a way in which to design new and unexpected forms of art and architecture? This is the question I asked myself before I made a new series of functional art structures.

They were all designed in an attempt to offer very unique sculptural places, themed around the idea of an unusual access to an enclosed, or partially enclosed portion of the pavilion.

RM HOUSE in Felgueiras, Portugal by FCC Arquitectura

Specification

To the existing implementation area (Farm House) is added to the establishment of 200,00m2 for housing construction.

The granary (8,00m2) existing will be recovered.

The existing buildings are in an advanced state of degradation. The interiors are in ruins. We decided to completely demolish the “core” of both and the roofs, recovering and consolidating part of the outer walls, which will be in memory of what existed. The new housing will be located within these limits, like a loose box, the new volumes are developed and are born from the ruins shaping itself to land following the natural curves of it.

The idea of a space and interior volumes’ distribution was created with a simple, concise and effective concept curated by Daniele Meni-chini architect study, based on some suggestions by Elena Tremolada, owner of Elenails center in Piombino (LI). The tones of black, white and silver are contaminated by the inclusion of purple shades as punc-tual or linear element in complements and lightings.

The walls are built in the lumber stack method (beam – sticker – beam). Nothing is nailed together! The beams are laid freely across each other. Nothing is sawed! The sawmill supplies four- and five-meter beams, whatever is excess can simply stick out at the corners. Stickers are made from three layers of laths – in place of the middle layer, we place at the corner a transverse beam. And look – it’s standing all by itself! Floor, ceiling, roof framework are formed from beams in a coffering system of transverse beams with their side-runners tied in place with twisted bailing wire. The roof covering is of plywood “dry-mounted” with laths and bailing wire. The building stands on stakes of tree-trunks positioned on oak slabs. Brace the building with steel wire and anchor it with eight pipes hammered into the ground. And we have our woodshed.

Scholzberg tower – Vertical storage of the wood in the form of a tower by e-MRAK – Martin Rajniš, Jan Mach

On a raised piece of land, find a place where rock protrudes from the ground. Place a truss made of four wooden planks onto stacks made of beams which are anchored onto the rock using threaded rods. Place planks onto the truss to form a square measuring 3 x 3 metres. Each unit is made up of two layers of planks interspersed with laths, with a thicker sticker consisting of double-width laths inserted between the units. Wooden steps forming a double helix are placed in each gap between units. There are sixteen steps per each full turn, i.e. 360 degrees. The helix is inscribed in a square. Use four-metre-long planks and laths straight from the sawmill, without planing or drying the wood. All the components are simply placed onto one another without the use of nails. Use steel cords on the walls to brace the tower. Place boulders with holes bored through them into four pits in the ground about seven meters away from the tower. Pull the threaded rods through the holes. The bracing cords are pulled through loops at the end of the rods. Weigh down the boulders with a heap of stones. It is all so easy that I built the tower with the help of a group of young people – students. Even so, there are a few important things one needs to know. So, please – don’t build without us!

Cylindrical Henley House in Victoria, Australia by Jackson Clements Burrows Pty Ltd Architects

Barwon Heads is in a period of significant change. Heritage overlays currently protect older fishing shacks whilst the less significant built fabric remaining in the seaside town is progressively being redeveloped and architecture is now significantly contributing to the evolution of this small coastal township. In this case a young family engaged JCB to design their new permanent residence which would replace a dilapidated 1950’s two storey house that was beyond repair. A sculptural building form emerged from the clients brief which jokingly requested a planetarium as an inclusion. This led to the exploration of circular forms and resulted in a circular skylight in the first floor living areas as a direct reference however the house was primarily conceived to immerse itself over time as a natural extension of the Ti-tree dominated landscape. The house is wrapped in as skin of vertical cedar battens (providing privacy and solar protection) which appear to emerge from the front fence intentionally confusing the relationship between built form and landscape.

Floating Platforms – Beach House in Paracas, Peru by Staff7

The project is a private beach house, located in the condominium Mast in Paracas, a 250 kms. the capital of Peru (Lima). It is in an area of 467.27m2 irregularly shaped front row with ocean view.

Our architecture is characterized by using geometric easy to recognize simple shapes that help create a clear picture of the house.
