Before & After – An Oakland House Transformation in California by Baran Studio Architecture

Thursday, April 30th, 2015

Article source: Baran Studio Architecture

The existing Spanish Style house had been modified adhoc (not to mention illegally) over the years with little attention to the net effect. As with many of the transformations we design, we took the existing conditions and capitalized on the best features of the house. These were the big, open back yard, the opportunity to connect the house to the outdoors, and the architectural interest of the split level. We also took queues from the nearby industrial and warehouse elements, and fused them with an interpretation of the neighborhood’s residential qualities. The hybrid result is simultaneously related to the context, and an architecture of its own.

LEISURE FACILITY ON THE LAKE OF VIOREAU in FRANCE by GUINEE*POTIN Architects

Thursday, April 30th, 2015

Article source: GUINEE*POTIN Architects

In the city of Joué sur Erdre, aside the lake of Vioreau, is set the Leisure Facility on the site called ‘la Boustière’.

The localization of the project is generated ‘naturally’ on three borders : on the North side the building is sitting on a hill ; there is an existing pathway bypassing the site from North to South ; a camping field is set on the West part of the site.

The site is turned to the South, facing the shores and the banks of the lake.

Discovering the site, one can measure the importance of a project that would have to be set as a link between the different elements composing the environment : the water sports facility, the parking lot uphill, the archery training spot, the camping site, and the pathway going to the lake.

Post-BSF, UPB submitted a range of potential projects for funding bids, and were successful in securing an Academies Capital Maintenance Fund for a new Sixth Form Block to the rear of the school site. The building provides valuable extra teaching, study and events spaces for sixth form students, and makes a positive contribution to Graveney’s campus and host of fine architectural buildings.

Monument Channel Cottage in Ontario, Canada by CORE Architects Inc.

Thursday, April 30th, 2015

Article source: CORE Architects Inc.

The design and construction of this cottage located in Monument Channel Georgian Bay was completed in 2014.

The cottage is 2,125 sq.ft. and is designed for year round use.   The primary building material is Douglas Fir, which was used as the exposed structural frame, ceiling decking, interior wall finishes, interior cabinetry and kitchen island, etc. The design celebrates the simple use of a post and beam structural frame, where the rhythm of the columns, beams and purlins gives an overall organizational logic to the scheme. The wood is either solid sawn or milled to a profile, the timbers are sometimes massive and other times just efficient in their size, all the timbers were prefabricated, drilled for connections, etc. in the factory. The wood is left untreated and natural on the interior and finished with a clear, penetrating oil sealer on the exterior. The exterior cladding is either structural wood or cedar shingles, Ipe is also used as the exterior decking material and for the guardrail top rail/handrail.
