Article source: INT-HAB architecture +design studio The residence is located in one of the prime localities of South Bengaluru, Karnataka. It is within a closed community of 600 houses. The site area being 2885 Sqft whereas the total built up of the residence was achieved up to 4600 Sqft. The residence is a G + 1 structure.
To revive the ontological significance of the existing house while, retaining certain structural elements was the Architect’s fore thought. The quest for the fore thought all arose when the requirement of an additional house on the first floor with added requirements for the existing house flourished. “The entire perception of the house revolves around reviving a Neo classical structure to Contemporary structure”. Being a load bearing structure there was not much scope to play with planning and forms. The extra spaces were created by using Mild Steel Frame structure to the existing Load bearing structure. The residence is converted in 2 dwelling for a mother and daughter, staircase is placed outside which in return, and these are blinded with internal courtyard with hardscape and soft cape. The idea here was to minimalize the demolition of the existing structure, where by changing the neo classical design elements to contemporary design elements. Hence the previous structure’s sloping roof was kept intact and used as an interesting water cascade which adds up to the design of the structure. The other aspect was the huge gathering space as the living and dining area lit by the natural light through the skylights. These skylights are visually connected but covered with glass, supported by M. S.box sections. The skylight which was introduced, gives way for the shadows to fall inside the house from the rise to the dawn. Beautiful patterns are observed in the internal part of the house. The drastic change in the facade is felt by covering the existing openings by solid wall with plastering and grooves and painting it dark brown. These changes are done as the facade faces the west. The mechanism of the water flow in the water cascade is kept simple and aesthetically appealing. The water is pumped up, followed by water flow through the interesting water cascade in the Deck space, which flows down again and gets collected in the water body below. This is how the recycling of the water is thought of to make it visually exciting as well as aesthetically appealing. The staircase is detailed in such a way, it is to be lighter and part of landscape. This is done with steel cladded with wood from bottom and finished with granite on top, with M. S.loops as a railing. The Contemporary character of the house is strongly reinforced by straight bold lines, exposed materials and minimal elements. Material palette employed is minimal. Negative spaces have been treated in such a way that they help to enhance functionality and aesthetics of positive spaces.
