In 588 BC, Siddhartha attained a fully enlightened being under the Bodhi tree and then taught the Buddhism to people. Many people have renounced the world and followed him. However, after several centuries flourishing, Buddhism has been on its decline. Currently, Buddhism is struggling to adapt to modern society.

House CS in Central Coast, Chile by Alvaro Arancibia + Sebastian Coll

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2015

Article source: Alvaro Arancibia + Sebastian Coll

This is a weekend house located on the central coast of Chile, 160 kilometers away from Santiago. The brief was to design a family house that could fit up to 12 people within a hilly site where the sea views are only possible in its highest point. In response to this, one of the main strategies was to rise the house above the surrounding dwellings and maximize the built area at that level, arranging the public programme on top and the private programme on the bottom. Due to the house faces south, the main floor follows a sloping roof that brings light from north and protects the public area from the sunset. Beside it, a lower height volume faces the street, concentrating the kitchen and main services, which are treated with a system of sliding shutters that control the privacy and views from the exterior. This volume does not only work as a buffer zone between exterior and interior but also as a scalar element that conceals the overall size of the house. In terms of materials, intention behind the choice of them was to use rough and cheapest construction systems such as concrete and brick for the core structure and then start dressing the house with finer elements such as glass, timber and steel that could give lightness to the house. These are used in many ways in the upper storey, becoming the flooring, ceiling, staircases, and ventilated cladding, among others.

THE MINTON in Singapore by DP Architects

Tuesday, April 21st, 2015

Article source: DP Architects

In today’s highly competitive home property market, what is valued is a design that differentiates the individual’s living experience, in line with market trends.

The Minton, completed in 2014, comprises ten 15-storey and eight 17-storey apartment blocks, with a total of 1,145 units including 24 units of penthouses. Despite its size, the development is an example of a unique high-rise living concept, built on a creative interpretation of the landscape and the provision of differentiated amenities. All blocks are oriented in the north-south direction in three linear rows, ample spaces maintained between the blocks. The design takes full advantage of the site topography in the use of open spaces and landscaping to create distinctively different experiences, facilitated by bridges and sky terraces connecting the blocks. Two of the three sky terraces accommodate spa facilities for residents, while the third serves as a landscaped deck connected to a bridge that links the different levels in this development.

Article source: Konishi Gaffney Architects

The project was to extend a small 1st floor flat into the loft and create a new bedroom with dormer. A simple brief complicated only by the lack of headroom in the loft, the client’s design ambition and conservative planning rules in this conservation area of Edinburgh.

Revitalisation of Spikeri Square and Daugava waterfront promenade in Riga, Latvia by Arplan, Ltd.

Tuesday, April 21st, 2015

Article source: Arplan, Ltd.

Historically, Spikeri was a warehouse district with 58 warehouses, built in the late 19th century, to store cargo from ships and train freights. Nowadays only 13 warehouses have been preserved, yet it is enough to feel the historic atmosphere. Spikeri square is a public space, constantly exposed to the changes of urban development and society evolution process, thus the historical environment is authentic and multi-layered, reflecting the citizen attitude towards cultural and historical values, accumulated there over centuries.
