Alpha in Lewisham, Sydney by Tony Owen Partners

Tuesday, May 12th, 2015

Article source: Tony Owen Partners

The Alpha by Tony Owen Partners has recently been completed. Located in Lewisham on the fringe of the Sydney city centre, the Alpha forms the cornerstone of the new McGill master plan prepared by TOP. Alpha’s distinctive design and style which sets it apart from other developments. Its hexagonal pod-like façade creates an environmental screen which controls light and frames the views, allowing maximum exposure as well as privacy. The seven storey building encompasses a selection of one bedroom and two bedroom apartments and retail/commercial spaces. The top levels contain two and three bedroom two storey ‘skyhomes’ with hexagonal metal pods leading onto expansive roof terraces with panoramic views towards the city and surrounding parklands. Sydney is defined by its outdoor living, for apartment dwellers their balconies are the outdoor space, yet until now few people have explored the potential to do something special with these balconies.

Ski jumps in Planica, Slovenia by abiro, Blenkus-Florijancic d.o.o.

Tuesday, May 12th, 2015

Article source: abiro, Blenkus-Florijancic d.o.o.

The main aspect of the design is the profound relationship between the construction, the constructed site, and the natural surroundings. As Planica lies at the forefoot of the Slovenian largest natural protection area, as one of the most exciting entry points to the Triglav National Park, the large sport facilities should somehow evoke their position. The precise planning of topography, the systematic selection and reduction of material, bold shapes and forms should line themselves with the exciting silhouette of the mountains, and the calmness of the pine and beech forest. Two posters were designed to show two contrasting design aspects, i.e. of winter, and late summer.

Surrounding environment

Rebuilding of a house at Nihonbashi-Ningyo-cho, Chuo-ku, Tokyo.

The house is built near the main street, and there are many old and new restaurants and shops around here. Almost all of the buildings has shops on the 1st floor, and houses or offices on the upper floor. There are many medium-size apartments and offices on the south of this site, so this site cannot get enough sunlight. Many four-storied of buildings are densely built in this area, so we have to consider about getting light and breeze well.

In the course of the revitalisation of the former Werzer cinema in Pörtschach, which was designed by the well-known “Wörthersee-Architect” Franz Baumgartner in 1930, parts of the roof truss were raised to make room for a spacious penthouse.

This 250m2 apartment has become the holiday home of a German business family of seven. Bright floors, cosy grey tones, and lavish white surface areas are the sound foundation of this apartment’s serene, harmonious atmosphere.
