Waagenturm by Wilk-Salinas Architekten

Friday, June 5th, 2015

Article source: Wilk-Salinas Architekten

The Waagenturm is a tower to control the access and weight of the trucks of the BRB, a Berlin-based company for the disposal and recycling of construction materials. In order to reduce the dimensions of the construction the stairs were planned as an exterior area, which covers in the ground floor almost the same space as the closed areas. It is attached to one of the narrow sides of the tower, which is supported by a single central pillar in order to avoid pillars on the corners. The three rooms are distributed in three levels and open to the outer spaces by means of big windows along the façade which also cover the corners. In the first level is the control room, the second level is the director’s office, and in the lower ground floor are the toilets, showers and storerooms. The materials used are the recycled concrete produced by the company, corten steel for the stairs and black profiles for the windows.

Sunflower House in Girona, Spain by Cadaval & Solà-Morales

Friday, June 5th, 2015

Article source: Cadaval & Solà-Morales

The Sunflower house sits on a privileged condition of limit; in the border within the water of the Mediterranean sea and the hard rock of the Costa Brava, between the wild nature of Cabo de Creus and the urban settlement of El Port de la Selva, a small fisherman village in the border of France and Spain. A place where the Pyrenees get into the water, generating an exceptional wildlife richness, both in the coast and in the water. The house wants to identify each of the particularities of this magnificent landscape; with its geometry, the house frames a multiplicity of different and specific views, and builds up content spaces that inhabit great big framed views.

The plot presents two problems: being exposed to the view of the houses around it and the noise of the train. The project could be understood as the answer to both facts.

Jalan Remis in Singapore by Aamer Architects

The Railway House

As a typology, the semi-detached house is often perceived as a Siamese twin, reluctantly conjoined to its symmetrical other via a single party wall. The desire to challenge such a notion drives the parti of this single-family house. By separating and pulling the main building block away from the party wall, a semi-detached house breaks free.

Mirdif Hills Masterplan in Dubai, United Arab Emirates by JDArchitects

Friday, June 5th, 2015

Article source: JDArchitects

JDA were commissioned to work with local architects A2Z to design and formulate a master plan for a 9 hectare site in the west area of Dubai city, close to international airport. JDA are responsible for the concept and design brief, with A2Z responsible for local design and technical brief. The completed master plan is 3.5m ft2 of new development and community. 70% of the development is residential apartments and duplex facing the parkland to the east. The central zone has a hotel with serviced apartments, shops and restaurants surrounding a piazza. The site runs east to west and can all be accessed by pedestrian ways through gardens, courtyards and climate controlled zones, with parking and utilities in the basement areas. JDA have designed a modern, sustainable development with local influences taken from traditional Emirate architecture. This includes a mosque, medical centres and nurseries. Mirdif is a gated community with all facilities for living in this harsh environment. Planning consent has been granted by Dubai Municipality. JDA have now embarked on detail design and tender for this project.
