Sunday, July 5th, 2015

Article source: Ministry of Design

CLIENT’S BRIEF
MOD was commissioned by CEL Development to strategise, brand and design a creative epicenter for the emerging black collar creative class, in the more gritty side of Singapore. In recent years, design firms have been migrating out of the CBD areas in waves, gravitating towards more affordable light industrial or warehouse districts, with larger floor plates and higher ceilings.

Nikken Space Design Osaka Office in Japan

Sunday, July 5th, 2015

Article source: NIKKEN SPACE DESIGN LTD

More than just creative
This is an in-house office plan of our design office. Approximately 30 staff members working in our office, which is located in the central part of Japan’s second largest city of Osaka, are engaged in the interior designing of a wide range of facilities in the public and private sectors, such as government agencies and company offices as well as hotels, hospitals, and educational institutions. Our new office needs to be a place ensuring more creativeness and higher productivity than others do, and we had to understand the nature of the staff members when we launched the office. Our staff members consist of professionals, including designers, computer graphic (CG) renders, and computer-aided design (CAD) operators. Each of the staff members belonging to the office is respected as an independent talented creator. Therefore, unlike typical enterprises, the office is of very flat organizational structure. Usually, each team of four to five members assigned promotes a separate project, and the team members are strongly aware of their organic ties. Therefore, we noticed at an early designing stage of the office that a fixed desk layout was not suitable to our style. As described above, the office produces value that it can provide to society from the character and talent of each individual designer. From this perspective, there was an opinion that the idea of making a highly uniformed workspace did not fit the staff members. Accordingly, how to achieve a creative place, where the character of each individual was respected and the organic connections of the individuals could be managed at a high degree of freedom, became the biggest theme of this project.

After emerging as competition winners in 2013, Vienna based architects Zechner & Zechner were commissioned with the design of the 115m-tall ORBI Tower high-rise project. Now construction has started for the new tower. On the journey from Vienna’s airport to the city centre there is no avoiding the urban-development project TownTown, where the new tower is located. Due to its prime position, the new high rise will be a welcoming sight to a large proportion of people arriving in Vienna by plane.

House in Blair Atholl, South Africa by Nico Van Der Meulen Architects

Sunday, July 5th, 2015

Article source: Nico Van Der Meulen Architects

The double volume entrance hall completely surrounded by glass, draws you in as it’s bordered by two double garages on either side. The symmetry of the timber wrapped garages highlights the transparency of the house as views of the garden captivate you even before you have entered. Enveloped in natural wood, the garage doors disappear into a timber wall paying tribute to Werner’s ability to transform the everyday ordinary into an extra ordinary design feature.

Elite Equestrian Center in Navarra, Spain by Francisco Mangado

Sunday, July 5th, 2015

Article source: Francisco Mangado

The plot is in the middle of one of the most humid valleys of northern Navarre. A valley of gentle but sturdy hills, where the green pasture and oak trees configure a landscape of strong character, whose color changes with the seasons. A valley dotted with a system of small and relatively closely-woven urban cores, configured in an apparently random way. The buildings are formed of large unitary and isolated volumes that seem to touch, but that in truth compete with one another to show their bold architectural character. A boldness that draws on the climate conditions, but also on the production system – stockbreeding –, which in past times forced to accommodate in one same house people and animals. A boldness that is particularly evident in the roof, whose role is to bring together all the different contents. Boldness, in the end, of ‘Navarre’s buildings’. This is the context for an elite equestrian center specialized in dressage and with boarding stalls for horses: one of the strongest and most sophisticated forces created by nature.

SITE

Little Willy is the name of a multifunctional complex combining a bed and breakfast, a penthouse, a shop and a restaurant.  Special about this project is the dialogue between the old and new, located on a small corner plot.  However Little Willy is more than just a striking corner building: it is part of the urban renewal that is going on for some years in the Brussels Dansaert district.

177 Social Dwellings in Valdebebas, Spain by Francisco Mangado

Sunday, July 5th, 2015

Article source: Francisco Mangado

The project tries to reconcile the privacy of the dwellings with attention to goings-on outside the block, so in the floor plan, the units are arranged in such a way that on the south side, towards the area that will accommodate offices and the ‘City of Justice’, a public zone will offer cafés, restaurants, stores, etc.; a recreational hub that will also be representative and vital in terms of exchange of functions, and therefore urban and with economic potential.
