Island Complex in Paihia, New Zealand by Bossley Architects

Friday, October 23rd, 2015

Article source: Bossley Architects

On an island in the Bay of Islands, four separate buildings discretely occupy an east-facing bay. The houses are light pavilions which promote the concept of ‘roof’ as the predominant element of shelter. The monopitch roofs float above and beyond the spaces, supported on exo-skeletal structures beautifully detailed in wood. Exterior walls are taut joinery frames, offering minimal interruption between inside and out. The boat shed is totally underground, to reduce visual built form in the bay, with the guesthouse above.

CICADA BAR in Alicante, Spain by Tomás Amat Estudio de Arquitectura

Friday, October 23rd, 2015

Article source: Tomás Amat Estudio de Arquitectura

The construction, which is designed for the city and to create a new meeting and communication space in the area, has been completed with input from multiple companies and institutions and refers to the old name of the space linking it to the place, nature and its current use. It is literally an insect perched on a garden. \”We made an adjustment to the space in which we live. An insect adapted to the environment, a project conceived and designed specifically for Las Cigarrreras, which is not a space to use. It was not about making a normal cafe, but an exceptional work that would link with the surrounding cultural environment.

ALPINE BARN APARTMENT in Bohinj, Slovenia by OFIS ARCHITECTS

Friday, October 23rd, 2015

Article source: OFIS ARCHITECTS

Traditional landmarks creating a Slovenian countryside also include different types of farmhouses, hayracks and barns. Unfortunately many of these no longer serve its purpose, therefore are mostly in poor condition, non-maintained and often simply destroyed and replaced with generic housing. Only by embracing the traditions that have been passed on to by their ancestors ensure that the Slovene vernacular architecture* survives not just as national symbol, but also an integral part of the Slovenian rural lifestyle.

30 SOCIAL HOUSING UNITS in VILLEFRANCHE-SUR-SAÔNE, FRANCE by PETITDIDIERPRIOUX ARCHITECTES

Friday, October 23rd, 2015

Article source: PETITDIDIERPRIOUX ARCHITECTES

Intermediate dwellings

The project takes the form of an urban micro-operation aiming to link a park, that had been isolated until now, and a boulevard running through to the town centre. This has resulted in a pathway being created in the middle of the plot to better make use of its heart and to define an unusual landscape. To either side of this axis, two quite different housing typologies have been built: to the north, a two storey building crossing through the site and, to the south, a series of interleaved houses. Each housing unit is extended by a vast outdoor space positioned either next to the entrance or to the rear of the unit. The most symbolic, being that of the main building, is constructed from a double latticework envelope and, extending the living room, creates an additional space of around 20 m².
