The key element around which this project is developed is a century-old holm oak which existed on the site. The home’s necessary spaces are arranged around the tree and a courtyard, where the floor plan’s axes convergeforming a Latin cross. The public rooms are arranged in such a way thatone perceives the holm oak’s presence from any point.

CYIN in Asahikawa, Japan by archi LAB.t+m

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2015

Article source: archi LAB.t+m

Located in Asahikawa in Hokkaido Prefecture, the house was built on a neighbouring plot situated on the southern end of the owner’s family’s home. Due to the climatic conditions of Asahikawa – an inland town with an extraordinary amount of snowfall in winter, and with a dramatic 40 degrees temperature difference between the summer and winter months – the design brief called for an effective architectural solution that not only incorporates good snow management system but also one that is able to minimise heat build up in summer, and reduce the pressure on heaters in winter.

Intellectual Property Office Headquarter in Beijing, China by KUAN Architects [UCD]

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2015

Article source: KUAN Architects [UCD]

This project is located at the Beijing TBD, in the northern district of the city, at the crossing of the North-South axis of the Badaling Expressway and the East-West axis of the TBD.

The site is divided into five parcels on both side of the TBD’s main landscape axis. The site is peculiar in its irregular quadrilateral shape, while all other blocks along the sides of the axis are rectangular grid. While the frequent approach would be balancing a regular site with complex architectural forms, we choose to use simple and concise shapes to balance the irregular site and use buildings to enclose a square plaza in the center. In this way, we also achieved the planning principle of reconciliating with the regularly gridded urban texture along the TBD’s East-West axis.

Urban Revitalization in Long Beach, California by Gwynne Pugh Urban Studio

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2015

Article source: Gwynne Pugh Urban Studio

In any major city, there are certain areas that become, or have always been, rough around the edges, driving residents away and contributing to a sense of urban decay. Whether through neglect, a shift in demographics, a change in the local economy, or other market forces, these areas become not just an eyesore, but a blight on the neighborhood. And so it was with a section of town in East Long Beach, California, which had deteriorated to the point of being a place that most residents of the city actively avoided.

9 Frames Hall in Ljubljana, Slovenia by SVET VMES Architects

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2015

Article source: SVET VMES Architects

The design concept for renovation of the entrance hall of Poljane Grammar School (established in 1889) in Ljubljana, Slovenia, was to highlight the existing qualities of the historical shell – preserved wall and ceiling stucco and elaborate columns, placed in a strict symmetrical axis. A small square in front of the building, the entrance hall and the central staircase are all connected by this important path that has been poorly manipulated by various spatial reconstructions in the past.

SPEECH CLINIC in Lisbon, Portugal by MMV ARQUITECTO

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2015

Article source: MMV ARQUITECTO

The clinic is understood as a place of learning, concentration, where the sound and image are mandatory elements.

Capturing the rhythm of words, the pause between them, noise and silence, full and emptiness, is the main idea of the project. From these assumptions and the analysis of the space, a landscape ceiling that vibrates like the cadency of the rhythms of nature is drawn. This mechanism is balanced with the simplicity and strength of the whole. The filter lets the air through and sets the sound, the mass contains both. The sensations of depth, transparency, opacity and flow are given by the subtle organization of materials.
