NYE SKÅPET MOUNTAIN LODGES in Soddatjørn, Norway by KOKO architects

Friday, January 29th, 2016

Article source: KOKO architects

Stavanger Turistforening (STF) or the Stavanger Tourism Association has 23,000 members and provides active, versatile and environmentally friendly activities in the wilderness for young and old, families, amateur hikers and mountaineering enthusiasts.
STF has 35 self-catering mountain lodges in the area. Visitors are usually members of Norway’s trekking associations. The system is built on trust: each person leaves money for the accommodation in a box inside the lodge or fills in an invoice form with their personal information. Since the lodges are mostly a long way from roads and traffic and difficult to get to, it is also the task of the visitors to take care of the visitors coming after them: everyone replenishes the food supply, brings firewood and cleans the lodge before they leave.

The project is a renovation work which has completely changed the distribution and the interior space of a 120 sm apartment built in the 60’s in Varese. The old partition walls and the long corridor have been demolished to give place to three big boxes inside the apartment; the new volumes, which contain the two bathrooms, the kitchen and the walk-in-closet, enlarge the space and define the rooms, leaving freedom of movement across the space and new perspectives.

Construction has completed on Red House, a 1910 farmhouse that went bold.

Construction has completed on Red House. Award-winning Waechter Architecture was given the challenge of breathing new life into an existing 1910 farmhouse-style building located in an urban SE Portland neighborhood. A balance between new and old was desired; memory of the original balanced with freshness and vitality of the new. The solution was to maintain the original form of the house but abstract it into a modern sculpture.
