‘Xylophone’ building for children with cerebral palsy in Haringey, London by phplus architects

Friday, March 25th, 2016

Article source: phplus architects

Working on behalf of the London Centre for Children with Cerebral Palsy (LCCCP), pH+ architects have received planning permission for an extension to their new premises, in the London Borough of Haringey, which will transform the way the charity works with children and the wider public. The children, young people and wider community will benefit from a range of new services and facilities, including a hydrotherapy pool, which have been funded by the generosity of private foundations.

Through a lengthy consultation process, the architects have worked with the charity to develop a centre with an inclusive design; one that helps children in particular develop in a series of differing environments designed to stimulate the senses through sounds, smells, light and varying surfaces. The architecture therefore becomes a tool to nurture young children. For example, ramps and lifts are important for accessibility but stairs will be employed at various key moments as part of the children’s walking programme. An external walkway wraps around the building, offering views out to the woodland landscape and allowing for movement through the fresh air. This walkway is enclosed by a timber screen which itself becomes a giant xylophone for children to play with. Sections of the cladding will be reflective so that children can observe their own movements.

House on Solitude Creek in St. Michaels, Maryland by Robert M. Gurney, FAIA, Architect

Friday, March 25th, 2016

Article source: Robert M. Gurney, FAIA, Architect

The design of this house in St. Michaels, Maryland was greatly influenced by environmental regulations, zoning requirements and restrictive building codes specific to this site. The existing Dutch Colonial Style house, built in 1989, was located within a One-Hundred Foot Buffer Zone on Solitude Creek, a small estuary in this Maryland Eastern Shore town. A recently adopted Floodplain Management Ordinance mandated that no new structures be built within the Buffer Zone, and that all renovated or altered existing structures be updated to meet new zoning, building and environmental code requirements.

House of Bread – Wunderkammer in Asten, Austria by COOP HIMMELB(L)AU

Friday, March 25th, 2016

Article source: COOP HIMMELB(L)AU

The Customer Information Centre and Event Forum “Haus des Brotes” (“House of Bread) for the company Backaldrin in Asten consists of two elements: a box shaped plinth building with foyer and event rooms plus the “Wunderkammer des Brotes”, a two storey freeform exhibition area floating on top. The chosen materials augment the contrast of these two elements: The square base building shows a cast-in-place concrete façade while the rounded wood structure of the museum is clad with stainless steel shingles.

EL MOLINO CULTURAL FACTORY in SANTA FÉ, ARGENTINA by Anna Prats MC Arq

Friday, March 25th, 2016

Article source: Anna Prats MC Arq

The Franchino mill stands as a metaphor waiting to become habitat, to recover its dimension, to be inhabited to say its words.

The word is mill; meaning use to grind, to pulverise, to turn the heavy things into light ones, to destroy the whole in order to achieve subtlety. It is something used to change the matter into a different thing, the flour of language, a way of naming us.

MOUNTAIN HOUSE in Pernink, Czech Republic by FAM Architekti (Feilden+Mawson Prague)

Friday, March 25th, 2016

Article source: FAM Architekti (Feilden+Mawson Prague)

The house is located 820 metres above sea level in the village of Pernink in a valley which is defined by a wild water stream. The prevailing western winds are tackled with a narrow gable end of the building. The house represents a hybrid typology of a small residential retreat and a guest house with facilities for skiing and nature hiking. The form of the house is largely defined by topography and the orientation towards views of surrounding woodland landscape. The external walls are made of 490 mm thick superinsulated rendered clay blocks which are also used for the main loadbearing wall. A sense of cave like protection against climate is supported by the journey from the entrance lobby to the upper floor living space which winds itself twice through this thick internal wall. The hierarchy of various internal ceiling heights is reflected through the exterior building form.
