Logistic Republic Office in Taipei, Taiwan by JC Architecture

Wednesday, April 20th, 2016

Article source: JC Architecture

Acting as the main office and reception of the vast logistic center in New Taipei City, the ALP owners wanted to establish a reference design for the workplace in the warehouse setting. We utilized the properties of key elements of the logistic center to develop the space. Racking systems, pallets and shipping containers all have the ability to form multi-level spaces within a space, carrying new products and possibilities.

Wednesday, April 20th, 2016

Article source: The American Institute of Architects (AIA)

This project represents the culmination of a 12-year effort to reimagine Williams College’s library and restore the campus’ historic Stetson Hall, which served as the library and now continues in an archival role by housing rare original copies of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. The results fuse new and old, intertwining the college’s historic roots with the forward-looking views of its scholarly community.

Ryerson University Student Learning Centre in Toronto, Canada by Snøhetta

Wednesday, April 20th, 2016

Article source: The American Institute of Architects (AIA)

Toronto’s Ryerson University is widely known for its engineering and business programs, but as an urban commuter campus it was missing sorely needed space for students to remain on campus to study or relax between classes. The school also struggled with its identity within the city as the majority of its academic spaces are housed in the existing urban fabric or are set back from the city’s major streets. The new Student Learning Center solves both of those issues by providing critically needed space for students, bridging the gap between the Ryerson Library and Archives, and weaving the school into the vibrant cityscape that surrounds it.

Hennepin County Walker Library in Minneapolis, Minnesota by VJAA

Wednesday, April 20th, 2016

Article source: The American Institute of Architects (AIA)

Facing challenges in the form of a modest post-recession budget, the need for a quiet library sited on a bustling urban intersection, and distinct design that needed to remain sensitive to the character of Minneapolis’ Uptown neighborhood, the new Walker Library serves as a living room for a diverse, arts-oriented neighborhood. The 30,000-square-foot building lies across the street from the original Beaux Arts building that housed the library until 1981, when a gloomy, leaking subterranean library that was anything but a civic asset replaced it.

Lawrence Public Library Renovation and Expansion in Kansas by Gould Evans

Wednesday, April 20th, 2016

Article source: The American Institute of Architects (AIA)

The renovation and expansion of this 1970s concrete library has transformed it into a 21st century civic place: from book repository to multimedia community hub. The design solution wrapped all sides of the existing library with a continuous reading room, emphasizing places of spontaneous gathering, reflection and learning. The addition also provides a high-performance thermal envelope engineered to harvest daylight and reduce energy usage. Openings at each corner reveal unique public amenities, including children’s’ cubbies, teen gaming zones, meeting spaces and a coffee bar. Within a few months of reopening, user visits increased 55%, with youth program attendance up 160%.

Renton Public Library in Washington by The Miller Hull Partnership

Wednesday, April 20th, 2016

Article source: The Miller Hull Partnership

When it opened in 1966, the Renton Public Library was an engineering feat. With pre-cast concrete and wood truss joists creating a stunning 80-foot central span across Washington State’s Cedar River and active salmon habitat, the library is beloved by generations of families and community members. Preservation of this community treasure was a clear priority for the project, but, by 2015, the library’s envelope was deteriorating and not in line with current energy codes. The structural system and chief design element did not measure up to current seismic standards, nor could it handle potential soil liquefaction.

Lightspeed in Montreal, Canada by ACDF Architecture

Wednesday, April 20th, 2016

Article source: ACDF Architecture

For the new global headquarters of Lightspeed, a burgeoning, Montreal-based developer of point-of-sale software, ACDF Architecture reinvigorated three floors of the historical Viger train station and hotel, a nearly forgotten, chateaustyle building whose pointed turrets overlook a prominent civic square. The studio did so by preserving the found, raw elements of the once-abandoned space, superimposing a layer of select, slick, wit-filled elements that pop against the roughness and reflect the clients’ dynamic, creative and vigorous brand.
