Casa do Medio in Santiago de Compostela, Spain by Arrokabe Arquitectos

Saturday, April 23rd, 2016

Article source: Arrokabe Arquitectos

For a long time the historical building was inhabited by a priest before then for 30 years was empty and finally to become the dwelling for a couple with their three sons. For the young family Arrokabe Arquitectos designed bright living and sleeping rooms on four floors. For the redesign of the old house the historic facade remained unchanged on the street side. Also, all bearing walls remain and have been supplemented subtly inside by a light timber frame construction. A key element of the house is the new staircase, which was placed after the restoration to its original location.

What surprises people most when entering and walking on the glowing white surface in this particular Private Residence (Williamsburg, VA) is when they find out they are walking on a sea of glass! Yes, GLASS! Not marble, not granite, but GLASS! Nathan Allan has created a very fresh, unique flooring surface, which is smooth to touch on the majority of the glass surface, yet has an almost invisible safety finish permanently embedded in the glass surface.

Article source: ikon.5 architects

Set in a bucolic residential neighborhood in Ithaca, New York, the simple zinc-metal and mahogany clad guest house rests upon an existing white-washed pool house foundation. The guest house is nestled across from an elegant whitewashed brick main house, complimented by a steel and wood pergola along its west edge, creating an intimate setting for an outdoor stone-terraced swimming pool court. The guest house cantilevers over the pool house to actively engage the main house while hovering above the existing pool.

The Maison du Savoir is both an icon of the future and a reminder of the past. Conceived and constructed by baumschlager eberle in cooperation with Christian Bauer & Associés Architectes as the focal point of the new University of Luxembourg campus, the building is a striking and highly visible landmark. What was once the site of a steel plant in the Belval district of Esch-sur Alzette is now the centrepiece of the new Cité des Sciences.
