District Water Board Brabantse Delta in Breda, Netherlands by Kaan Architecten

Tuesday, July 26th, 2016

Article source: Kaan Architecten

Rather than the arrival of a new office building, the realization of the headquarters of the Brabantse Delta water board signifies a new lease of life for the century-old country estate (first mentioned late 14th century), and an important symbol for the landscape at the South of Breda. With its new premises on the Bouvigne estate, the district water board has provided appropriate continuity for a piece of cultural-historical heritage. The scope of the commission was broad, extending the castle, the gardens and the surrounding structures and grounds, including the chapel and the castle gatehouse.

Noor Restaurant in Córdoba, Spain by ggarchitects

Tuesday, July 26th, 2016

Article source: ggarchitects

Spaces, motifs, materials and light evoke the atmosphere of the Caliphate in the pursuit of a complete andalusian gastronomic experience

When Paco Morales embarked on the opening of his newest restaurant in Córdoba, he parted from a clear and ambitious premise: to regain and reinterpret Andalusian cooking from an avant-garde andhaute cuisine perspective. Therefore, the Cordoban chef didn’t conceive NOOR as a usual restaurant, but as a “cultural project” which would provide diners a complete gastronomic experience, that is, an actual recreation of what a palace banquet at the 10th century Medina Azahara might have been. Thisrequired going beyond a mere gastronomic proposal and involved all aspectssurrounding NOOR: from architecture to staff clothing, taking care and pampering every detail about decoration and tableware.

It breaks the isolation of this district, which is undergoing extensive overhaul, links the east suburbs of the Paris Metropolitan Region to the city centre, and ensures connections with tramline T3. The station came into service in December 2015, after five years of works, and is expected to handle 85,000 passengers daily by 2023.

Empty Nester Residence in Arlington, Virginia by Studio Twenty Seven Architecture

Tuesday, July 26th, 2016

Article source: Studio Twenty Seven Architecture

This new house is for an “empty-nester” couple downsizing to a smaller residence now that their children have grown.

The program for the new house was only 2400 square feet, but this was significantly larger than the 1600 square feet found in the existing homes in the neighborhood. The most contextually appropriate massing for the new house was to work with the “pill-box” typology of the original structure. Rotating the orientation of the roof line ninety degrees provide a house with a similar street presence massing but the ability to move deeper into the rear of the site. The home was to be constructed by a local builder using builder-level detailing and common materials and framing. The Owners elected to use wood siding on the exterior for its visual warmth and renewable quality.

Theatre de Kampanje in Den Helder, The Netherlands by van Dongen-Koschuch

Tuesday, July 26th, 2016

Article source: van Dongen-Koschuch

Theatre ‘The Kampanje’ is the new cultural centre and playhouse of Den Helder, located in the city’s old naval yard ‘Willemsoord’. The project transforms a collection of maritime buildings, which have been inaccessible for over 170 years, by introducing new public functions such as a concert hall, flexible performance spaces, an art centre, offices and a restaurant. Inspiration for the design is drawn from the identity and character of the historic buildings, an interplay of structure, craft, public space, docks and water.
