As part of the 15th International Architecture Exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia, the Collateral Event “Time Space Existence” at Palazzo Mora – This project explores an architecture that embraces environmental changes and proposes a structure that will ebb and flow with the tides, that will respond to predicted environmental changes, and that creates a community to exist in harmony with the sea and our coastal landscape in perpetuity.
The Ten at South Person was designed for a vacant site in downtown Raleigh. The project is a new housing format for Raleigh – modern, affordable, and possessing row house DNA. The design maximizes square footage at low cost, builds from defining characteristics of a surrounding historic district, and creates a healthy streetscape via stoops and the play of materials and relief on the street facade. The units sold in only six days at a price that was the least expensive per-square-foot housing offered in downtown in years. Despite its modern form, the complex is nestled comfortably within the neighborhood.
The Dundee Residence landscape transforms a simple pool deck and poorly maintained hillside landscape into an exuberant space for living and entertaining, and ultimately a dynamic play space for a mother (and Hollywood stylist) and her young children. The house was built speculatively in the 1990’s and designed to mimic the steep architectural pedigrees of its international style neighbors. Dundee sits perched high in the hills with sweeping views of Downtown Los Angeles to the South and the chaparral hills of Griffith Park to the east. Located in hills above the Los Feliz, the neighborhood is home to actors, rockstars and Hollywood elite and to some of LA’s most significant architecture, including Frank Llloyd Wright’s Ennis-Brown House and Richard Neutra’s Lovell Health House.
Welltower Inc. (NYSE:HCN), a leader in health care infrastructure, and partner Hines, the international real estate firm, today unveiled the first rendering of a 15-story, 125,000-square-foot property they will develop at 139 East 56th Street on the northeast corner of Lexington Avenue and 56th Street in midtown Manhattan. The property, designed by SLCE Architects, LLP, is an as-of-right development that will have retail at its base and a senior living and memory care community above.
Our clients wanted a four-bedroom house with large public spaces that would open onto a constrained suburban site near downtown Raleigh. The existing site was long north to south and sloped down to the street on the north side. A stream bisected the site near the street, and the associated floodplain precluded construction on the front half of the property. A dramatic slope at the rear of the site prevented locating the house far back on the property. Our response to these constraints was a compact, two-story “L” that creates an private outdoor space between the house and the hillside.
The Corbett Residence is on a wooded site, down a winding drive. The drive is thin and meanders between trees to protect the house from view. The house is a low black box that strikes a line across the slope, mimicking the horizon. The house is at the edge of a hill, above a creek, and is oriented to admit light and views of the forest. At the east end of the house, the master bedroom looks out to a large red oak and fern glade. Our clients, who are restrained, contributed beautiful ideas and challenged us to express necessity.
The Botanic Gardens’ new 5,258-square-foot Science Pyramid’s iconic design reflects a blend of progressive design, sustainable technologies and biomimetic principles that mirror the building’s purpose—the advancement of science. Intended to showcase the fascinating research being done at the Gardens on contemporary botanic and environmental issues as well as topics like the global steppe climates, the new space will empower visitors to become citizen scientists and do their part as ambassadors for global conservation as a part of the Gardens’ broader mission. Various projects conducted under the Gardens’ Center for Global Initiatives will also be featured.
A young Manhattan expecting couple approached us, as they began looking for real estate for their growing family. This brought them back to their childhood neighborhood of the historical gardens of Forest Hills, NY, where Fredrick Law Olmstead had masterplanned the leafy modern enclave. This clean modern interior renovation converts a spacious 2 bedroom into a 3 bedroom and a flexible home office. In our early discussions, a small request for a \”phone jack and outlets for a laptop by his bed\” quickly evolved into realizing that our client’s work involved all hours of the day. Creating a dedicated home office became central in organizing the apartment spaces; the office became a buffer between the public open living spaces and the private bedrooms. We provided a teak slat screen to allow for light and filtered views; while a large frameless glass sliding door opens up the space onto the open dining and living room. By the time we completed the renovation, the client decided to permanently work from home.
