Medlin Residence in Raleigh, North Carolina by in situ studio

Saturday, June 18th, 2016

Article source: in situ studio

Our clients wanted a four-bedroom house with large public spaces that would open onto a constrained suburban site near downtown Raleigh. The existing site was long north to south and sloped down to the street on the north side. A stream bisected the site near the street, and the associated floodplain precluded construction on the front half of the property. A dramatic slope at the rear of the site prevented locating the house far back on the property. Our response to these constraints was a compact, two-story “L” that creates an private outdoor space between the house and the hillside.

The Corbett Residence in Bahama, North Carolina by in situ studio

Friday, June 17th, 2016

Article source: in situ studio

The Corbett Residence is on a wooded site, down a winding drive. The drive is thin and meanders between trees to protect the house from view. The house is a low black box that strikes a line across the slope, mimicking the horizon. The house is at the edge of a hill, above a creek, and is oriented to admit light and views of the forest. At the east end of the house, the master bedroom looks out to a large red oak and fern glade. Our clients, who are restrained, contributed beautiful ideas and challenged us to express necessity.

Holder Apartment in New York by Sonya Lee Architect

Wednesday, June 15th, 2016

Article source: Sonya Lee Architect

A young Manhattan expecting couple approached us, as they began looking for real estate for their growing family. This brought them back to their childhood neighborhood of the historical gardens of Forest Hills, NY, where Fredrick Law Olmstead had masterplanned the leafy modern enclave. This clean modern interior renovation converts a spacious 2 bedroom into a 3 bedroom and a flexible home office. In our early discussions, a small request for a \”phone jack and outlets for a laptop by his bed\” quickly evolved into realizing that our client’s work involved all hours of the day. Creating a dedicated home office became central in organizing the apartment spaces; the office became a buffer between the public open living spaces and the private bedrooms. We provided a teak slat screen to allow for light and filtered views; while a large frameless glass sliding door opens up the space onto the open dining and living room. By the time we completed the renovation, the client decided to permanently work from home.

The Windhover Contemplative Center, designed by Aidlin Darling Design, is a spiritual retreat on the Stanford campus to promote and inspire personal renewal. Using Nathan Oliveira’s meditative Windhover paintings as a vehicle, the center provides a refuge from the intensity of daily life.  It is intended for quiet reflection throughout the day for any Stanford student, faculty, or staff member, as well as for members of the larger community.

Hupomone Ranch in California by Turnbull Griffin Haesloop

Saturday, June 4th, 2016

Article source: v2com

Hupomone Ranch is an original 160-acre homestead located in the Chileno Valley, just three miles west of downtown Petaluma. The ranch had been fallow for over 30 years and the owners, a young family with three children, wanted to build a barn house that would reflect their commitment to sustainable farming, draw on the natural serenity of the site and build on the sense of place in western Petaluma where farming and ranching are still a part of people’s daily lives.

Casa Linder in Texas by Buchanan Architecture

Saturday, June 4th, 2016

Article source: Buchanan Architecture

Casa Linder is a 3,700 square foot single-family residence located in a well-established, but transitional East Dallas neighborhood. Informed by the owner’s fondness for reclaimed materials, and inspired by the historic architecture of the Texas Blackland Prairie homestead vernacular, Casa Linder embraces the architectural heritage of the earliest Dallas settlers by blending the simple forms and materials of the original prairie dwellings with contemporary planning and crisp detailing.

Article source: Klopf Architecture

The owners came to Klopf Architecture with a clear vision: Create a brighter home with clean lines and visual surprises – but that enhances the Eichler vernacular – that blurs the boundaries between inside and outside and supports “modern living”.
