Narvarte Terrace in Mexico by PALMA

Friday, August 18th, 2017

Article source: PALMA

In Mexico City, the growing demand for housing in certain areas, as well as the increase in density, has motivated the population to find ways of making the most out of their rooftops. In this case, the client was looking to expand a small extra room to be used as a full studio with an independent access. One of the walls was partially demolished in order to add a second volume which would house the kitchenette, storage space, and a sofa-bed. The two volumes are connected by a metal roof which extends out to the edges of the house to create a covered patio. Thanks to a double wall and sliding pocket doors, the studio can be open up completely towards the terrace. The ‘incisions’ made to the existing structure are highlighted with a cement stucco finish and white paint, leaving the older brick exposed.

Architecture as a symbol. a protruding wing in the entrance shows the way, a sweeping buckled roof of black concrete leads to the reception area on the inside, to the lounge, bar, and out to the landscape. the ceiling grid mirrors the new implants. an open floor plan with small boxes or dens provides an intimate atmosphere. in the landscape, a well-lit stairway serves as the link between the outdoor and indoor pools. the bronze monolith seemingly grows out of the ground, out of its depths, and at night becomes a light installation.

The parcel interested by the intervention is occupied by a small 1970’s warehouse used as a utensils’ depot. A first intervention turned it into a commercial space for the sale of products complementing bathroom furniture; a second intervention amplifies the volume characterized by a big covering vault which repeats the construction system and faces it with a mimesis attitude.

The Wedge House in Athens, Greece by schema architecture & engineering

Wednesday, August 16th, 2017

Article source: Schema Architecture & Engineering

The Wedge house is a custom-built single family home located in the northern suburbs of Athens, in the mountainous and full of pine trees area of Penteli, named Drafi. The site is quite distinctive and has many challenging features. The main complexity is the steep terrain with an almost 20-meter-height-difference from one side of the site to the other. The virtually vertical cliffs on both edges made access very difficult, so when a mild inclined surface appeared in the middle of the site it was quite inevitable that the house would be situated there.
