The Great Wall of WA in North Western Australia by Luigi Rosselli Architects

Sunday, July 24th, 2016

Article source: Luigi Rosselli Architects

The longest rammed earth wall in Australia and – probably – the southern hemisphere, has been selected as a finalist in the (Australian Institute of Architects) Western Australia architecture awards.

At 230 metres long, the rammed earth wall meanders along the edge of a sand dune and encloses twelve earth covered residences, created to provide short-term accommodation for a cattle station during mustering season.   With their 450mm thick rammed earth facade and the sand dune to their rear and forming their roofs, the residences have the best thermal mass available, making them naturally cool in the subtropical climate.

Ekaterinensky Congress Center in Krasnodar, Russia by Piuarch

Sunday, July 24th, 2016

Article source: Piuarch

Piuarch’s design of the new Ekaterinensky Congress Center in Krasnodar, Russia, has been appointed for construction.

Located on the banks of the Kuban River, the design proposes a three level cultural complex, with a total floor area of 2,840 square meters. The plans include a conference hall with a capacity of 720 seats – which can be set up in different configurations – as a foyer, a restaurant, a bar and service areas, all the while offering a scenic view of the river bay on the side of the city, and a new pedestrian plaza where the entrance to the center will be located.

The building will also feature terraces on the roof and outdoor spaces on the ground floor, which allow for the expansion of the internal functions.

The project has offered Piuarch the opportunity to activate the relationship between the city and the river by designing a connection among the natural water environment, the coastal parks, and the urban area: reconfiguring the city’s interaction with the river.

“Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam, be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home.” – John Howard Payne.

We leave our home land for many reasons. Earning and education are the most common of the causes. So what do you do when the sound of your childhood calls you across vast distances of land and seas?

Pavilion in Mumbai, India by Abraham John Architects

Sunday, July 24th, 2016

Article source: Abraham John Architects

The Pavilion was built on an existing underground water tank that dictated the foot print of the structure. Glass became the primary material for construction as the Pavilion was sited amidst lush tropical greenery. Glass not only formed the walls but also the roof in the form of a strategically placed skylight opening up to the view of a large jackfruit tree above blurring the boundaries between the inside and the outside.

Sensing The Waves in Prato, Italy by NIO Architecten

Sunday, July 24th, 2016

Article source: NIO Architecten

The “Centro per l’arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci” was opened in 1988 and donated to the city of Prato by Enrico Pecci, in memory of his son who died at an early age. The museum is situated on the periphery of Prato, near the exit of the A11 highway, a strategic spot where, from the first floor, you can see the skyline of Florence, the city where tourism and ancient culture reign. On this spot however, two opposites dominate: (textile) industry and modern art. The art centre is one of the few museums in Italy that is devoted to modern art and furthermore, that possesses a superb collection which, for lack of exhibition space, is stored in various depots. To be able to display the invisible works of art it was decided to double the exhibition space and to solve two important problems with the new construction.
