Project B by JUMA architects

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2017

Article source: JUMA architects

For the thorough renovation of an old farm, JUMA architects set out in search of the perfect balance between old and new.

In its previous state, the house – which did have a cosy feel – was entirely lacking in terms of spaciousness, light and vision.

To remedy this, the new design planned for a huge window opening in the rear elevation that would create a view on the beautiful garden and at the same time draw in plenty of natural light. The new joinery clearly distinguishes itself from the existing window openings through the use of a black, simple framework, eliminating all possible confusion about which parts are authentic, and which are not.

Fish Creek House in Victoria, Australia by Edition Office

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2017

Article source: Edition Office

The house sits firmly along a winding ridgeline on the outskirts of the small township of Fish Creek. The home surrounds itself in a highly textured brickwork wall in response to its exposed position to strong local winds and a nearby country road. This long wall wraps the three nested, black timber pavilions of the house like a rough and coarse blanket and offers them shelter while they sit upon the lower wall edge and gaze out upon the undulating and extraordinary coastline of Wilsons Promontory. The three pavilions are pulled out from each other and from the northern edge of the rough brick wall to allow sunlight to slide deep into a series of sheltered and planted courtyards that offer immediate garden and deck relationships to the interior spaces. These interiors provide a warm and robust palette of timber-lined walls, black-pigmented concrete floors and black form-ply ceilings.

Smallfry in Adelaide, Australia by Sans-Arc Studio

Friday, September 29th, 2017

Article source: Sans-Arc Studio

The project

The brief called for a takeaway seafood bar, serving the 9-to-5 office worker for lunch and dinner, directly to the street and to a small dine-in crowd. The client knew that he wanted ‘something different’, something that would stand out against other venues in the area and unlike other typical seafood bars. The small site needed to work at maximum efficiency, with a service point to the street key to the operation of the business. The front of house space is divided into two – a sterile and clean service side; and a textural, inviting space for customers. The venue is casual, but refined, considered and unique. Efficient back of house operation and service to the street was prioritised. The kitchen layout was designed in close collaboration with the client and chef to ensure maximum efficiency throughout prep, cooking and service to the interior and street.
