Buena Vista in Queensland, Australia by Shaun Lockyer Architects

Thursday, November 24th, 2016

Article source: Shaun Lockyer Architects

Buena Vista challenges the idea of what a house looks like in a contemporary Brisbane suburb. The architectural idea centres around a brick and sheet metal industrial aesthetic that simultaneously references and subverts the local vernacular. The house embraces the courtyard plan which affords the occupants city views whilst allowing an intimate and private lifestyle.

The Craft Company in Cascais, Portugal by phdd arquitectos

Thursday, November 24th, 2016

Article source: phdd arquitectos

The Craft Company is a small shop in the historic center of Cascais, on two floors with about 40m2 each. Initially there were three “nicely” fitted.

The yarn store invites us to a journey in time, the meeting between the modern and the classic. That was the customer’s goal and was the principle for the development of the project.

Physical Therapy Clinic in Granada, Spain by CUAC Arquitectura

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2016

Article source: CUAC Arquitectura

Stretchers, hoola-hoops, wedges, rollers, bosus, Pilates balls of various sizes… It would be a shame to hide all the tools that allow for physiotherapy exercises to occur in a clinic that lacks technological machinery. If there is something that characterizes the commercial shop that previously stood on this site, is its exterior display, through the means of a façade opening. Continuing through it, in a passive way, its old exhibitionist framework and purpose.

SYDNEY STREET in Queensland, Australia by Shaun Lockyer Architects

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2016

Article source: Shaun Lockyer Architects

Sydney Street involved the re-calibration of 100 years of Queenslander vernacular into a contemporary inner-city home. The idea was to renovate and extend the cottage in such a way as to reinforce and maintain the original geometry and form. The new architecture is expressed in the outdoor room and the ground plane of the ‘undercroft’ where brickwork has been chosen to ‘anchor’ the house into the site. A sympathetic but edgy approach to detailing and material completes an engaging and relevant addition to the tree-lined streetscape.

The National Science and Innovation Centre in Kaunas, Lithuania by Architects of Invention

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2016

Article source: Architects of Invention

Cityscape – urban integration

This proposed design for Science Island creates a marked but porous division between a newly created urban environment and existing parklands. In keeping with the Science Centre’s emphasis on environmental matters, this design provides a natural barrier across the island to preserve the purity of the park. The orientation of the building allows for a fluency of movement via bridges – the existing pedestrian bridge and a new south-bank bridge – connecting the island to the old-town and expected future developments in South Kaunas. To minimise car traffic, we have kept the Science Centre as close to the Žalgiris Arena as possible. Since most visitors to Žalgiris Arena arrive in the evening from 20h, we propose that this existing car park be available to Science Centre visitors during its daytime opening hours. Deliveries will be restricted to the East side of the island. The building’s main principle is to divide the island into two parts – the landscape and the hardscape.
