Article source: The American Institute of Architects (AIA)

Sited in a rolling meadow in Galway, Ireland, with uninterrupted views in four directions, the Biosciences Research Building (BRB) is the first phase of a new North Campus Science Precinct at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG). The BRB provides high technology science research space dedicated to cancer research, regenerative medicine, chemical biology and BSL3 animal research, and is one of the most energy efficient research buildings in the world dedicated to such an intense scientific agenda. It was also constructed for an extremely low cost per SF ($413), as compared to similar facilities, which typically cost $600-800/SF. In fact, 89% of the building is used for research space.

JC CARRIERE THEATER in Montpellier, France by A+Architecture

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016

Article source: A+Architecture

The Domaine of O, departmental domain of art and culture, is an exceptional place that combines history and modernity, nature and culture. Before anything else it is a place shaped by History that maintains its finery to the South of the site, its beautiful flowerbeds and its original plant species, a testimony of history, that of the famous “folies héraultaises”. At no point was it about contemplating a glorious past, keeping it and simply fixing it. On the contrary we envisionned a place turned towards the future, and what better way to testify our confidence in the future than building a cultural facility of this kind?

WOODLAND in Isle of Wight, England by One World Design

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016

Article source: One World Design

Woodland is near the River Yar and lies within the Causeway Conservation Area. The site was purchased by a retired couple who have made the island their home. Although anxious to preserve the character of the Causeway they wanted to replace an existing timber cottage with a more open dwelling and a new garden. Crucially, they also wanted to be unobserved by passers by.

Operating area Povodí Vltavy offices in Ceske Budejovice, Czech Reublic by ATELIER 8000

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016

Article source: ATELIER 8000

A closed complex of modernised and new buildings meets the needs of a modern industrial works. There is a new office building close to the river and a bike path, and a repair hall with a crane runway and workshops by the road. Grown trees separate both parts of the complex. The complex will substantially upgrade the original deteriorated condition – green areas will be larger complemented new pathways. The shape and size of buildings respond to the natural shape of the lot and copy its borders. Buildings are mutually positioned to establish differentiated environment outside and inside the area and a screen visually and functionally separating the industrial complex from the main roads. By its morphology and traditional building materials – wood, concrete, glass and steel structures for  shading sails/screens – the oblong office building evokes the relation of the business with water and with water structures. The main wall is clad in wood and window openings cut through it act as a flood barrier at the same time. It is continued by a glazed part, shaded by a system of independent sails set in front and terminated by a reinforced concrete gable roof.

White Apartment in Uherske Hradiste, Czech Republic by Next Level Studio

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016

Article source: Next Level Studio

Over three years lasting reconstruction of the 3+1 apartment in Uherske Hradiste, Czech Republic appealed an endless process of thoughts and construction operations, which finally filled the visions. Every line on a sketch, every statement in a computer programme, as well as every single building block, was considered as crucial everything influencing steps. The most difficult task for an architect – is designing for himself. How to recognize reserves in the design, how to set the limits behind which he doesn’t need to go though the possibilities are finally almost limitless? The design was treated as the opportunity to try out certain procedures, materials and technologies. I am interested in monochrome space, where light can be experimented. White itself has many shades, tones, and valeurs. During the day, the Sun warms the interior with light of 2000 – 3500K. While the artificial evening light set on 4200K, cools the space. Artificial light casts varied shadows, highlights different elements and the interior transmutes. Colour RGB LED strips; hidden in the niches of the furniture, enable dynamic coloration of the space. They can “paint” the space in accordance with the current wishes.

Marine Base Amsterdam Building 27E in The Netherlands by bureau SLA

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016

Article source: bureau SLA

The Marine Base in Amsterdam has been a restricted military area for centuries, located in the heart of the city. In January 2015, the compound has begun a gradual transition towards a more public program. The departure of the designated marine units will be completed in 2018. Building 27E, a former education facility, is the first building on the site to be renovated for a public program. It had recently been dismantled and stripped down to a bare concrete skeleton. In June 2014 The Central Government Real Estate Agency commissioned bureau SLA to present a design accommodating new uses within the building. To host the Dutch Presidency of the European Union, taking place during the first half of 2016, the building was completed in January 2016.

Shelter for an agricultural vehicle in Brandenburg’s countryside.

The Ökonomiebau provides a small shelter for an agricultural vehicle in the urban hinterland of Berlin. This very unusual request offered the possibility to design a building with an extremely low budget, whose goal consists only in protecting its content from the rain.

National Grid Car Park in Warwick, UK by One World Design Archtects

Sunday, May 1st, 2016

Article source: One World Design Archtects

National Grid’s HQ, National Grid House, on the outskirts of Warwick, within view of the Historic Castle, houses some 2800 staff. It is operational 24 hours a day, every day of the year and is a site which controls and is critical to the power distribution infrastructure in the UK.  National Grids commitment to sustainability in all their undertakings has meant that the brief for a new car park on this site would always lead to something extraordinary – with the car park now finished it has literally come alive.
