Ryerson University Student Learning Centre in Toronto, Canada by Snøhetta

Wednesday, April 20th, 2016

Article source: The American Institute of Architects (AIA)

Toronto’s Ryerson University is widely known for its engineering and business programs, but as an urban commuter campus it was missing sorely needed space for students to remain on campus to study or relax between classes. The school also struggled with its identity within the city as the majority of its academic spaces are housed in the existing urban fabric or are set back from the city’s major streets. The new Student Learning Center solves both of those issues by providing critically needed space for students, bridging the gap between the Ryerson Library and Archives, and weaving the school into the vibrant cityscape that surrounds it.

Lightspeed in Montreal, Canada by ACDF Architecture

Wednesday, April 20th, 2016

Article source: ACDF Architecture

For the new global headquarters of Lightspeed, a burgeoning, Montreal-based developer of point-of-sale software, ACDF Architecture reinvigorated three floors of the historical Viger train station and hotel, a nearly forgotten, chateaustyle building whose pointed turrets overlook a prominent civic square. The studio did so by preserving the found, raw elements of the once-abandoned space, superimposing a layer of select, slick, wit-filled elements that pop against the roughness and reflect the clients’ dynamic, creative and vigorous brand.

Kinderkreisel, nursery in Hamburg, Germany by KRAUS SCHÖNBERG ARCHITEKTEN

Tuesday, April 19th, 2016

Article source: KRAUS SCHÖNBERG ARCHITEKTEN

The nursery on Hamburg’s northeast side occupies a large site where the children can play amid mature trees. The relationship to nature is an important part of the school’s pedagogic concept. The building integrates in the small-scale fabric of neighboring sin¬gle-family homes: the build¬ing mass has been apportioned in smaller subunits which are linked by open courtyards. Each of the classrooms has an adjoining quiet room and lavatory.
