Espaço S in Portugal by Qiarq . arquitectura+design

Thursday, March 19th, 2020

Article source: Qiarq . arquitectura+design

Architecture is seeing birth and making life projects happen. And if so, this is undoubtedly an excellent example. An open space, ready to receive such important areas as physical rehabilitation, women’s health, baby’s health, family health, well-being and nutrition. These are some of the areas that combined with a simple and committed working spirit, direct and without prejudice make the image of this clinic.

The key concepts for the development of this clinic begin with neutrality and minimalism (technical floors, white walls and clean lines), combined with the warmth of the reception (woods and fabrics) and the workforce (ropes), without forgetting that we are an integral part of everything which is natural (stone and plants).

Recreation center in Athis-Mons, France by GRAAL ARCHITECTURE

Thursday, March 19th, 2020

Article source: GRAAL ARCHITECTURE

The construction of the Jaurès recreation center provided the city of Athis-Mons with an opportunity to equip itself with a facility for small children adapted to open learning methods and at the same time help to reduce the pressures of the towns growing population.

The zone is characterized by its geography, a very fragile alluvial plain between the Seine and the Orge, which was ideal for locating important railway infrastructure and urban development stretching lengthwise form the southwest to the northeast. This area is subject to a number of rights of way exposing it to important nuisances. Thus, the Jaurès school complex plays the strategic urban role of liaison with the rest of the neighborhood. The school complex stands in a residential area comprised of a number of period buildings of varying typologies. The urban challenges of the project were to create a pleasant entry opening onto the pedestrian area and the church of Notre-Dame de la Voie as well as to undertake an urban and architectural recomposition in which the recreation center plays the role of connecter between the different scales.

Italian Pavilion at Expo 2020 in Dubai by CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and Italo Rota Building Office

Thursday, March 19th, 2020

Article source: CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and Italo Rota Building Office

Exactly one year before the opening of the World Fair in Dubai (Expo 2020), Italy unveils the final design for its national pavilion, conceived by CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati, Italo Rota Building Office, matteogatto&associati and F&M Ingegneria. As if docking after a journey by sea, three boats will arrive in Dubai and become the backbone of the pavilion, part of an exploration into recycling, circularity and reconfigurable architecture. The Pavilion will open its doors to the public on October 20th, 2020, in Dubai, U.A.E., and will remain open until April 10th, 2021.

The radical design is based on a circular approach to architecture. Three boats will arrive in Dubai and will be converted into the pavilion’s roofscape. In a similar way, the project integrates sustainable materials – such as orange peels, coffee grounds, mycelium and recycled plastic extracted from the ocean – as construction elements.

Mayhew Theater in London, England by Gilbert-Ash

Wednesday, March 18th, 2020

Article source: Gilbert-Ash

In March 2019, Prince William’s presence at The Mayhew Theater in London was captured by media outlets throughout the world. He was speaking to an audience celebrating the opening of the visually stunning Mayhew Theater in London, a new teaching and presentation space built in the courtyard of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. While many eyes and ears were listening to the Prince’s keynote, keen AEC observers were taking note of the visually stunning theater.

Built by contractor Gilbert-Ash, the glass, steel and wood building has a complex design. Along with an impressive custom glazed oval walling system, one of the most notable design elements in the superstructure is its cantilevered hyperbolic paraboloid top ring beam with a zinc roof. It’s often referred to as “The Pringle” (potato chip) due to its shape. To put that highly geometric language in context, it essentially means that the Mayhew Theater was a complicated structure to build.

Article source: Spring Valley Corp

The Woodsy Park pavilion in Toronto, Ontario features artwork by Studio Kimiis called “Droplet”. The work consists of wall coverings on the pavilion, an extending canopy, a snow wall and seating. Steven Beites, principal of Studio Kimiis, declares in his artist’s statement that the work will “form a varied yet uniform waterscape across the pavilion. It pays tribute to the area’s most distinguishing feature: the ravine system, and the community activities in and around the pavilion. The work highlights the important connection with the site’s history and its natural setting, and its role in shaping both the physical and social fabrics of the region.” The pavilion was designed in collaboration with DTAH and Spring Valley Corp of Ancaster, Ontario to create a series of ultra high-performance concrete panels across the exterior. The panels were created by using a proprietary ultra-high performance concrete mixture and titanium dioxide to achieve the brilliant white finish.

The apartment is located in the north side of Beijing and occupies the last two floors of a townhouse. The house is around 300 sqm and has as special feature a big rooftop terrace.

In the first floor the design aimed to open the entire floor to a big living space. The existing staircase had been demolished, partition walls had been removed and several structural walls had been perforated to improve the movement between different functional areas.

The space is zoned by build in furniture, creating rooms without the need of solid partition or doors.

Formentera Water Sports Center in Spain by Marià Castelló

Wednesday, March 18th, 2020

Article source: Marià Castelló

The port of La Savina is the main point of access to Formentera island. Its important geographical location makes it the border between an urban area, the Mediterranean Sea and a saltwater lake which forms part of Ses Salines Natural Park. Giving protection to the open sea, this lake has traditionally been used as a natural harbor to anchor small fishing boats. And, currently, the administration has deemed it suitable to house the municipal sailing school as well as other nautical sports and activities.

The functional program offered a duality (classrooms + offices versus workshop + dressing rooms) that has divided the volumetry into two independent parts aligning the first one with Almadrava Street and the second one with the passage of Balandra. At the intersection of both streets, the building offers an empty space with its visual permeability that incorporates the main access to the equipment. Between the two described volumes, there is a structure that provides a chill-out zone in the shadow and with its oblique geometry invites to enjoy the amazing views opening towards Estany des Peix.
