Marquise House in San Paolo, Brazil by FGMF Architects

Tuesday, March 29th, 2016

Article source: FGMF Architects

The programme of the residence is relatively extensive, although common. The ample site, about 700m² (around 7.500ft²) in area, is located in a neighbourhood ruled by a specific set of laws that demanded larger-than-average setback in all sides, decreasing by much the total uplifting area.

Durban Skytree in South Africa by Tiago do Vale Architects

Tuesday, March 29th, 2016

Article source: Tiago do Vale Architects

Though architecture has always been about dealing with complexity and contradiction -recalling Venturi- 21st century architecture will deal with a very specific set of challenges of growing prominence: how to provide economic housing while increasing density; how to rejuvenate mono-functional city centers in the face of real estate speculation; how to build affordably with sustainability; how to construct bigger with a smaller CO² footprint.

Located in Durban, South Africa, the Skytree proposal tries to give an answer to these points while creating a landmark that relates both to city and landscape scales but equally integrates smoothly into the neighborhood’s scale and life.

Petit Lapin Bakery in Westmount, Canada by Architecture Open Form

Sunday, March 27th, 2016

Article source: v2com

Recipient of the Surface Award attributed by the 2015 Grands Prix du Design and a comity made up of 14 architects, designers, directors, teachers and presidents of associations, the Pâtisserie Petit Lapin is the first pastry shop in Montreal to offer delicious treats that are gluten-free, lactose-free and without the ten priority food allergens.

Situated on Victoria Avenue in Westmount, it occupies a small commercial space of 342 square feet in a basement with a six-foot-wide hall connecting it to its street-level entrance. The challenge was to peak the curiosity of passers-by in order to lure them inside. To do this, Architecture Open Form, led by architect Maxime Moreau, created a series of textured surfaces, with a modular system of “softwalls” with integrated LED lights, to present the pastries, highlight the double-height entrance hall and give the space an illusion of grandeur. The “softwalls” unfold in a continuous gesture on the walls and various ceilings, leading customers in the transition between the retail entry and the downstairs counter.

The project involves the reuse of the ticket office of the adjacent multisport facility, abandoned since years and its reconversion into a coffee-bistro.

The property, owned by the municipality, has been the subject of a call for tenders for the award to private investors, with the aim not only of renovating a run-down but mainly to combine the private’s wishes and aspirations with the public needs by means of a quality planning.
