Bund SOHO in Shanghai, China by gmp Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partner

Wednesday, March 16th, 2016

Article source: gmp Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partner

More than half a century after the last new building at the Bund, Shanghai’s historic promenade along the Huangpu River, the famous row of bank and commercial buildings from colonial times has been rounded off with a new architectural highlight. As the last building – for now – in the first row along the river, the Bund SOHO business and office ensemble, designed by gmp Architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners, adds to the characteristic skyline which gave rise to Shanghai’s reputation as the „Paris of the east“. The practice had won the international competition organized by the SOHO China Group in 2011.

Keptur Hotel & Convention in Antalya, Turkey by Engiz AE ltd

Wednesday, March 16th, 2016

Article source: Engiz AE ltd

The location is an access into or exit from the city of Antalya. The environment is the pine forests of the city and also the industry zone. The requirements of the zone should have been well analysed through the planning process. The product is a 130-140 rooms capacity business hotel, with a well designed spa and convention hall. The scale of buildings not to exceed the pine trees silhouette and by the use of timber, glass and mirror, the architecture tried not to disturb the mood of nature with its horizontal lines, through transperency and reflection effects.

The old stone wineries of the Ribeira Sacra (Galicia) were (and are) heterogeneous constructions linked to house where the activities of the local economy are developed, such as preserving ham, wine and spirits in addition to storing straw and putting the beasts to rest.

The project fully recovers one of these old cellars to convert it into a new home. The project is based on three premises:

Nakagawa ShotenOmotesnado Shop & Office in Tokyo, Japan by Jo Nagasaka / Schemata Architects

Tuesday, March 15th, 2016

Article source: Jo Nagasaka / Schemata Architects

At first I was pleasantly surprised to discover this land filled with such lush greenery in Aoyama, in the middle of Tokyo. I wanted to provide the same kind of pleasant surprise to customers of this shop, both on the first and second floors.  The building stood there, simple and open towards the existing greenery, and seemed to harmonize with the vitality of the land. Respecting such surrounding environment, we tried to minimize the infill construction and composed the interior with furniture instead.

Airport Traffic Control Tower in Turkey by RMJM Group

Tuesday, March 15th, 2016

Article source: RMJM Group

Bird – Spirit of the Tower

An air traffic control tower is the absolute symbol of aviation industry, of traveling, of welcoming and of wishing good bye. The highest building in the airport is as important as a first impression as any. It signals arrival or departure, safety and a watch over the complicated and definitely not earthly experience of flying. In other words although not a gate in shape it is undoubtedly the metaphor of one.

Bala Line House in Ontario, Canada by Williamson Chong Architects

Tuesday, March 15th, 2016

Article source: Williamson Chong Architects

Within Toronto’s network of well-preserved ravines and valleys, historic rail lines are occasionally found nestled unused on steep, wooded slopes between the upper plateau of residential fabric and the river valley habitats down below. A de-commissioned rail spur – once used for an industry-focused early 20th-century city – has evolved into a common passage for hikers and neighbours as it connects the local ravine pathway system to newly developed community areas such as the weekly farmers market at the revitalized Don Valley Brickworks. Upslope, a rare accessible lot lining the western edge of the ravine, some 60 feet above the Bala Line rail path, is the site for a single-family dwelling that engages this alternative connection to the city infrastructure.

In Japan telling someone that he is a snake means a compliment. In China snakes and dragons often mean the same. The symbol of wisdom andeternal life, this tower would embellish any Eastern city.
