Business Building in Nova Gorica, Slovenia by Real Engineering d.o.o.

Friday, October 2nd, 2015

Article source: Real Engineering d.o.o.

The commission was straightforward: to design and construct a new commercial building on the outskirts of Nova Gorica, a Slovenian city founded in 1948 near the ‘original’ town of Gorica and close to the Italian border.  The Slovenian investment group Istrabenz Gorenje, who among other things invests in new energies, wanted an environmentally friendly building that would also provide space for a kindergarten.

Droneport in Rwanda, Africa by Foster + Partners

Friday, October 2nd, 2015

Article source: Foster + Partners

Lord Foster has launched proposals for the Droneport project in Africa to support cargo drone routes capable of delivering urgent and precious supplies to remote areas on a massive scale. The project is a collaboration between Redline partners led by Afrotech, École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL); the Norman Foster Foundation; and Foster + Partners. Cargo drone routes have utility wherever there is a lack of roads. Just as mobile phones dispensed with landlines, cargo drones can transcend geographical barriers such as mountains, lakes, and unnavigable rivers without the need for large-scale physical infrastructure. Just a third of Africans live within two kilometres of an all-season road, and there are no continental motorways, almost no tunnels, and not enough bridges that can reach people living in far-flung areas of the continent.

Zig Zag in Nieuwveen, Netherlands by Möhn + Bouman Architecten

Friday, October 2nd, 2015

Article source: Möhn + Bouman Architecten

This two-storey, 110-meter long residential centre for people with mental disabilities has been designed in close conjunction with an existing tree structure. The resulting zig-zag- shape visually divides the building in smaller, human-scale areas, thus avoiding the perception of an institution. Slowly rising between the trees, a structure of wooden boardwalks accesses the dwellings on the first floor, providing it with a secondary landscape with a unique quality of its own. Every-group dwelling has its own entrance, with integrated sitting benches marking the transition between outside and inside. They are inviting residents to linger and interact with others, as do the retreating zones inside, featuring moos-clad floors and birch trunks.

GROCERY STORE in Ritten, Italy by MESSNER Architects

Friday, October 2nd, 2015

Article source: MESSNER Architects

The starting point for the development of the architectural design was the building‘s positioning and orientation within the lot focusing on the site-specific morfological aspects of the ground, the connection to the existing road and path network as well the functional requirements to the premises.

Øvre Forsland Power Station in Helgeland, Norway by Kebony

Friday, October 2nd, 2015

Article source: Kebony

Norway, a country that generates more than 80% of its electricity from hydropower, has added to its renewable repertoire in the guise of a beautifully Kebony-clad 30GWh plant. The plant is situated deep within the mountains of Helgeland, a hiker’s paradise just below the Arctic Circle. The region is known for its unique coastline and spectacular mountain formations and the architects wanted the plant’s design to be inspired by and reflect the landscape, whilst also functioning as an attraction for hikers in the back country wilderness.

WELCOME HOTEL in Jodhpur, India by Malik Architecture

Friday, October 2nd, 2015

Article source: MALIK Architecture

Mansingh resort has been conceptualized as an Oasis that alleviates the visitor from the parched, harsh landscape. It rises from the sand dunes as a beacon to tourists much in the same way as Oases were to wandering travelers of the past. Like an Oasis the landscape is very integral to the design. The site spreads out like a series of pavilions around landscaped courts. The project has a number of local points of interest in the vicinity like Mehrangarh Fort, Umaid Bhawan Palace, and Jaswant Thada. The city is known as the Sun City for the bright, sunny weather it enjoys all year. It is also referred to as the Blue City due to the blue tinge of the whitewashed houses around the Mehrangarh Fort.

Auditorium of AZ Groeninge in Kortrijk, Belgium by Dehullu Architects

Thursday, October 1st, 2015

Article source: Dehullu Architects

The auditorium is part of a meeting centre that is situated on the site of the general hospital of AZ Groeninge in Kortrijk, Belgium. The hospital itself and all of the infrastructure is designed on a strict cartesian grid. Compared to the hospital the auditorium is only a tiny building, it is located in a corner of the site. It was the intension of the architects to design a building with its own identity, a building on which the cartesian grid was not imposed. It is a hide-out for the staff of the hospital, a place to be away from professional obligations, well integrated in the green surroundings. The building is distinct, has a gracious and optimistic elegance.
