Millgrove House in Toronto, Canada by Toms + McNally Design

Tuesday, October 17th, 2017

Article source: Toms + McNally Design

For Toms + McNally Design, Architecture is a response to context. Millgrove House, located in rural Hamilton, sits on a property that contained an abandoned apple orchard, and a hay-growing farm for local use. Situated between mature treelines and forests, the site is gently rolling. As a result, the design strategy was to use the topography in order to maintain a modest appearance from the street while providing a spacious home for a middle-aged couple with four adult children.

A residential building on a prominent urban development site at a corner by the Helmut-Zilk Park is setting a vitalising accent on the new district of the Central Railway Station – the contest-winning project of the architecture collective feld72. The building is positioned opposite the already existing Sonnwendviertel educational campus, its striking corner situation creating a landmark within the developing urban district. The building typology harks back to the characteristics of old city buildings, enabling a rich diversity of uses. One of its main focuses is on the practical options offered by the “Stadtsockelzone”, the ground floor area, promoting revitalisation of the neighbourhood.

Casa crisp is the transformation of a modest 1.5 bedroom brick veneer cottage into a light-filled, environmentally inclusive home for a young family of 6.

The original cottage has been transformed into a modern beach house with a sophisticated interplay of natural materials and considered volumetric arrangement. A rectilinear timber form now sits atop the original brick veneer podium keeping much of the existing dwelling intact.

Innermost, with their eclectic and daring collections, represents for us all the best from British culture. When we met Steve, Russell and James, we immediately understood that by the strength of their pieces and their design diversity of their pieces (although of them connected at the same time), it was a company we were going to get along with very well.

Article source: PHAB Architects

The 1920s packing shed is the only building remaining from the once prosperous Nestle condensed milk factory—an important centre of Toogoolawah’s economic and social life until the factory was destroyed by fire in 1951. The inception of the art gallery and workshop project began in 2012 with a grass -roots push from the community. The opening exhibition in December 2015 featured 31 local artists and a display by the Toogoolawah and Districts History Group, positioning the building as a catalyst for the ongoing cultural life of the region.
