The family villa in Prague, Czech Republic by Ing. arch. Jan Lapcik (FUSIONarchitects) and Ing. arch. Jarmila Kopecna

Sunday, March 20th, 2016

Article source: Ing. arch. Jan Lapcik (FUSIONarchitects) and Ing. arch. Jarmila Kopecna

The original family villa is a work by architect Prager from the 1970s. It was not only a unique building, but also one at a unique place that thanks to its orientation offered an exclusive view to Prague and provided necessary privacy at the same time. A strict and exact cube with its austere elegance looked inconspicuous from the street. The villa was originally designed for the architect’s family. Yet the villa kept changing together with the family. The originally open ground floor was encased in masonry walls. Steel columns supporting the single-storied mass of the flat were included in the bricked outer walls. This is how the two-storied block was built accommodating two separate flats – one on each floor. The garden was the outer connecting living space for the life of two generations.

Casa Meztitla in Tepoztlán, México by EDAA

Sunday, March 20th, 2016

Article source: EDAA

“Casa Meztitla is an intervention of a natural scenario. It showcases the luxurious value of leisure, the tropical weather, the intense sunlight, the smells of nature, the over 500 year-old landscaped terraces and the ever-present rock mountain: El Tepozteco. It is context in itself. The house, built out of rough stone, crawls low under the trees, aligned with the vegetated-covered stone slopes. It is the creation of pure space within the natural space (Paz, O., 1987). It has an introverted living yet is continually open to its surroundings. Only two elements reveal its existence to the outside world: the colorful bougainvillea flowers showing randomly through the trees’ dense foliage, which mark the plot’s perimeter; and the massive and monolithic white box that emerges through the treetops.”

Abbaye Belgian Restaurant in Chengdu, China by MRDA Architects

Sunday, March 20th, 2016

Article source: MRDA Architects

The rapid urbanization process in China totally splits the historical and contemporary buildings. The abundant history and  traditional culture  that cities bear is gradually overwhelmed by fanatical development. Historical  buildings represent a city’s past  that has been given the meaning of urban culture. However, most of the historical buildings have been given up in the impetuous development.

The “Open Air” School of the city of Vienna, often referred to as the \”Baslerschule\”, completed in 1951 and designed by Roland Rainer, is located on the southern outskirts of Vienna (23rd district) in the middle of a heterogeneous environment. This elongated, L-shaped, single-storey, landmarked building with a gabled roof received an extension in the 1970s in the form of four free-standing annexed classrooms constructed in wood adjoining the eastern end of school grounds.

Il Pirata in Belfast, United Kingdom by Oscar & Oscar

Article source: Oscar & Oscar

Based loosely on the informality of the Venetian Bacaro and a sense of place that was more Meat Packing District, New York than Holywood, County Down, il Pirata’s concept of small rustic Italian dishes to share set to challenge the preconceptions of the Northern Irish diner on their associations with Italian restaurants, and dining in Northern Ireland in general.

Day center and home for the elderly of Blancafort.

A social building necessary for the elderly of the village of Blancafort and its neighboring municipalities.

The initial observation of the plot and its environment led to consider that the future building did not have to solve only a program and a requirement of an isolated building, but it also had to help consolidate the nearest urban fabric, creating an entrance to the village with its own personality and public character.
