A perfect platform for Manolo Blahnik

Nick Leith-Smith Architects’ long-standing creative partnership with Manolo Blahnik continues with the brand’s largest global outlet to date in one of the world’s most celebrated department stores, Harrods. Designed by the architects in close collaboration with Manolo Blahnik himself, the new Manolo Blahnik London is located within the store’s fifth floor ‘Shoe Heaven,’ a 42,000 square foot salon dedicated to fine footwear.

Boutique Penelope in Québec, Canada by Hatem+D

To celebrate the company’s 45 years of existence, the owners of Boutique Penelope wanted to not only expand their Place Ste-Foy business in Quebec City but also refresh its brand image through a new store design. The goal was to create a flow between the various spaces while preserving the existing display cases. Hatem+D Architecture used a logical and harmonious design concept to devise three distinct and well-defined zones. The “watches” section, in elegant black located in the back of the boutique, features a sales counter and a screen wall. In the middle, the white “jewelery” area illuminates the space with its counters and a repair workshop that’s cleverly delineated with frosted glass partitions. The balance between this opposition of black and white is smoothly interrupted by the champagne coloured gemstone station, a display overhung by a sculptural structure that resembles the facets of cut diamonds. The space is topped with a white acoustic module with recessed light fixtures, which brings an elegant contrast to the black ceiling. The large volumes and visual oppositions of this layout all blend together elegantly. Customers are offered an experience that’s both sophisticated and functional, and whose beauty is only matched by the refreshing and refined design.

Cultural and Social Center of Valence in France by Bureau Architecture Méditerranée

The project speaks of a strong urban presence, with an institutional façade that aims at establishing an harmonious dialogue with the adjoining public square. Of major importance is its centrality in the neighbourhood, asserting itself as a meeting place for young people and the general public.

New STGM Architects head office in Québec, Canada

STGM’s new head office is located in the Beauport borough of Quebec City, adjacent to the Estimauville eco-neighbourhood. It is a 1,000 square metre two-storied structure that puts the focus on eco-friendly, architectural innovation. The building succeeds in offering an exceptional level of comfort to its occupants through the mindful integration of a longitudinal form, orientation to the sun, light wood structure, meticulously selected materials and efficient systems, while producing a low ecological footprint. High performance concrete siding combined with Eastern Cedar creates an impression that is both simple and dynamic, with attention given to the relationship between solids and voids that lend the building an air of elegance that belies both time and fashion. From the first sketches, the designers sought to attain a high level of sustainability – a principle already at the heart of the firm’s priorities, using creativity to implement the strategies necessary to reach LEED-NC Platinum level. With this objective in mind, comfort, simplicity and coherence were selected as founding principles.

Villa Budapest in Hungary by NAPUR architect kft

The sunny side of the TOTEM

The Villa with two flats is situated on the slope of Márton Hill in Budapest.

The area of each flat is 350 square meters, there is a cellar, groundfloor, firstfloor and loft. The building itself has definitely two fronts. Tradition and modernism are integrated as a „body sculpture”. While in the north side, along the street, pitched roof geometry caracteristic of the Carpatian Basin is revealed, in the south, garden side completely modern structure opened up for the eye.

Fitzroy Park House in London, England by Stanton Williams Architects

Stanton Williams were commissioned to create a new family home in North London within the Highgate Conservation area, replacing a late 1950s house.

The design strategy takes advantage of the sloping site by creating new additional spaces within the lower garden level. Above this a series of interlocking sculptural forms of glass, timber and stone emerge.

HOME centre for international contemporary art, theatre and film in Manchester by Mecanoo

Located at First Street, HOME forms the cultural heart of one of the largest areas of development in Manchester city centre – a flagship building that acts as a catalyst for the surrounding area. As the base for the new organisation formed by the merger of Cornerhouse and The Library Theatre Company, HOME has been designed to allow for the commissioning, production and presentation of critically engaged and technically complex artistic projects, as well as the hosting of large scale cultural events. The overall budget for HOME was £25 million. Its striking exterior acts like beacon, while the welcoming public spaces and social areas within are designed to be inviting to all. HOME is like a second home, a cultural home: a place for making, meeting and socialising, alongside enjoying the very best in international contemporary visual art, theatre and film.

Rozany Potok House Interiors in Poznań, Poland by Neostudio Architekci

The purpose of the project was the rearrangement of an existing house, characterized by a multiplicity of levels of the interior. It has up to 5 levels, with 90 m2 of the living space. The significant problems of this system were: communication nuisance and low penetration of natural light inside the residential space. The project was focused on natural light exposure improvement and bringing into it a high-quality artificial light as well as facilitation home program by moving the existing functional system. Ascetic design and bright colours of the interior made it possible to emphasise the experience of openness space.

Velenje City Center Pedestrian Zone Promenada in Slovenia by ENOTA

The Velenje “Promenada” is an important city space and a vital city thoroughfare. It is one of the central axes of the centre of Velenje, a young town designed in the 1950s, based on the Modernist ideal of the garden city; as such, it is unique in the Slovene space. The renovation of the Promenada represents the first step towards the gradual revitalisation of the city centre. It’s tasks are to supply the city with the missing programmes and to help it reclaim its original character of a town-in-a-park. A successful renovation, informed by the awareness of the excessive surfaces designated for traffic, must bring together two requirements seemingly at odds with each other: “More greenery and more programme.”
