A couple, a traditional house in the Empordà and one dream.
Houses should evolve along with its user. Ana María and Manuel, our clients, made the decision of spending as much time as possible in their summerhouse in Sant Mori. Located between Figueres and Girona, Sant Mori is a rural village with irregular geometry, which offers a characteristic Mediterranean landscape scenery to its inhabitants, bounded by long fields and forests.

The Periscope Tower is a giant wooden periscope structure that serves as an observation tower and engages the viewer ina dialogue with the landscape. With the help of a large mirror the Periscope Tower makes it possible for everyone to enjoythe views of the surrounding landscape. One can either climb up the stairs to enjoy the view over the lake and into thesurrounding landscape from the viewing deck, or simply stay on the ground and get the view through the periscope mirror.Made entirely of wood, the building is composed of an inner core of cross laminated timber (CLT) and an external wooden frame that serves as a load bearing structure. The inner core made of CLT forms the frame for an extra large periscope with stairs circling around it. When taking the stairs up or down one can experience a rich range of different views framed by the various openings cut into the structure.

Starting with the aforementioned demands and the conviction of designing an urban house, two ideas relative to the spatial organization prevailed above the rest.
The first consisted of appealing to the horizontal dimension: this was materialized through the configuration of the living spaces in an open plan set at street level. In this manner it established a link and an uninterrupted prolongation of the interiority and domestic uses onto the exterior spaces. Continuity only mediated and protected from the street noise by green spaces. This was achieved with the application of diverse mobile walls which with their hiding and different configurations enable the spatial performance.
